An employee in this classification, under the general direction of the Park Ranger - Aquatics is responsible for maintaining safe aquatics operations and efficiently and effectively administering emergency protocols at Thelma G. Spencer Park through rigorous training techniques, strict lifeguard protocols and policy enforcement. The employee will monitor and evaluate aquatics staff on a continuous basis and will make necessary changes to correct any issues.  This position requires a high level of dedication and vigilance.

This is a seasonal position capped at 720 hours per year, to be allocated from April through September.  This is a 40 hour a week position with occasional overtime.  Time off during the period of Memorial Day through Labor Day will be limited, outside of this time the schedule is more flexible.  An employee in this classification will work non-traditional shifts including weekends and holidays.

  • Prioritizes safety in all aspects of decision-making processes. Monitors and upholds the safety standards of the aquatic area.

  • Serves as the main responder in emergency situations. Accountable for training primary responders who will act as a back-up.

  • Participates in the hiring process of aquatic staff by assisting in the administration of a pre-employment skills test and engaging in interviews.

  • Identifies training requirements and topics, assesses training gaps, conducts pre-season training sessions, and develops or finds pertinent training materials.

  • Evaluates the abilities and performance of beachfront personnel to collaborate with the Park Ranger in conducting performance assessments.

  • Coordinates the schedules for beachfront staff.

  • Engages with the public to de-escalate confrontations, deliver excellent customer service, and maintain the safety of park visitors.

  • Monitors and maintains equipment functionality. Offers recommendations to the Park Ranger regarding requirements for new or replacement equipment.

  • Monitors swim area utilization, watercraft activity, and safety concerns for emerging trends. Provides recommendations to the Park Ranger to align with these trends.

  • Promotes the adherence to standards of quality and professionalism among staff while actively collaborating with them to boost morale and create a spirit of camaraderie.

  • Prepare an annual report detailing operational highlights, staff trends, challenges, and provide recommendations.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Minimum 18 years of age.

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a supervisor of an aquatic facility.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Lifeguard (may be concurrent with supervisor experience).

  • Current Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification or be able to obtain Red Cross Lifeguard certification within 2 weeks of hire date.

  • Experience with developing water safety protocols.

  • Excellent public interaction skills.

  • Basic computer skills.

  • Must be available to work a variety of shifts including day and evening, weekend and holiday.

  • A valid Michigan driver's license with no more than 4 points currently on record.

  • Acceptable criminal history.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Medical First Responder experience or equivalent.

  • Experience as a lifeguard or supervisor at an open water facility.

  • Red Cross Beach Front Module certification.

Pay Rate: The pay rate for the position starts at $19.00/hour, should an applicant maintain or obtain a Lifeguard Instructor Certification (which would be reimbursed by the City if obtained after hire), the pay rate would be $20.00/hour.

Oral Evaluation of Qualifications (Interview): To evaluate technical knowledge, decision-making/problem solving skills, employment history, communication skills and other factors related to successful performance in this position. (Minimum Passing Score: 70%)
