GRADE: 12 TIER: 1 DEPARTMENT: Health Center REPORTS TO: Diabetes Prevention Program Manager
Part-Time Contract to end 11/08/2019,
25 hours/week, schedule will vary (occasional weekend work)
The Assistant Gardener is responsible for assisting the Seasonal Gardener in the management of day-to-day operations. The position will assist in the everyday maintenance of the community garden plots, including but not limited weeding, watering, planting, as well as the collection and distribution of produce to the community.
Weed various community gardens, using gardening equipment provided.
When needed manually irrigate community gardens and raised beds.
Walk and/or drive automated vehicles as requested or required, in order to perform duties on the reservation.
Assist with the planting and general care of garden plants.
Ensure all project tasks are completed following project timeline.
Operate small machinery when necessary to perform daily assignments.
Assist in the distribution of produce to the community.
Track food production and community participation.
Assist in the organization and facilitation of community garden clubs.
Work directly with Tribal Elders and language department to learn stories and names of traditional produce.
Assist in the coordination of educational activities, food presentations and festivals in the community.
Maintain gardening supplies and equipment.
Assist the Seasonal Gardener in any other necessary day to day responsibilities.
Works cooperatively within the office, Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, and other agencies; as needed
All other duties as assigned

High school diploma or G.E.D.
Valid Kansas driver's license, must be insurable with the Nation's insurance
Must possess knowledge of general gardening techniques
Must possess knowledge of farming equipment
Must be familiar with clinical aspects of diabetes, familiar with nutritional and lifestyle approaches to preventing diabetes and diabetic complications
Must possess professional work ethics, manner, and appearance
Must possess the ability to operate general office equipment
Must be available to work 25 hours/week on a flexible schedule to meet the demands of the position which may include weekends.
A record of satisfactory attendance and performance in all prior and current employment as evidenced by positive employment references from previous and current employers

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have full range of mobility in upper and lower body; be able to reach overhead; be able to work in various positions, including stooping, standing, bending over, sitting, kneeling and squatting for extended periods of time; be able to lift, pull and push materials and equipment to complete assigned job tasks; and be able to frequently lift 50 pounds of weight throughout the assigned workday.
