Job Title: Seadog Deckhand

Reports to: Captain, First Mate or Supervisor on duty

Job Summary:

The successful deckhand is responsible to maintain the appearance and cleanliness of the vessel, ensuring guest comfort and safety while underway, and assisting with docking and undocking. Shipmates must uphold the strictest safety standards for guests and crew, while maintaining a professional and friendly manner consistent with Our Service System.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide exceptional hospitality to guests and coworkers as prescribed in Our Service System (OSS)

  • Follow safety procedures in order to ensure the protection of passengers and vessel

  • Participate in routine safety drills to prepare for major incidents

On Water

  • Handle lines to moor vessels to pier

  • Stand watch over passengers in ships' bow or stern in order to look for obstructions in a ship's path or to locate navigational aids such as buoys and lighthouses

  • Assist Captain and supervisory personnel to maintain vessel equipment and systems while maintaining cleanliness and safety of all common areas

  • Deliver informative and entertaining narrations to passengers on Lakefront and Extreme Thrill Rides.

On Dock

  • Advertise upcoming cruises to patrons by passing out brochures and answering questions

  • Ability to lift at least 90 pound ramp to safely board and disembark passengers

  • Maintain order on dock and in front of ticket booth by facilitating lines and providing assistance to guests

  • Actively engage with guests by answering questions, assisting with strollers or walkers, etc.

Maintenance

  • Sweep, mop, and hose vessel decks and exterior to remove dirt, and debris

  • Load or unload materials from vessels; gather and remove trash from vessel

  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Be prepared to begin work at scheduled time, dressing and stowing personal items prior to clocking in

  • Maintain uniform and personal grooming in compliance with appearance standards found within employee handbook

  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisors on duty

Accountabilities:

The successful shipmate will personally contribute to the unforgettable guest experience, be favorably viewed by supervisors and peers, and be swift and efficient in the execution of their assigned duties. Performance will be measured by guest and mystery shopper satisfaction surveys, departmental tests, management evaluation, and feedback from peers on the marine operations team.

Job Specifications / Qualifications:

  • Energetic, friendly and enthusiastic demeanor

  • High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate) preferred

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Pre-employment and on-going random drug testing is required for all marine personnel

  • Must be able to effectively understand and convey written and verbal information to guests and coworkers

  • Must possess a service orientation actively looking for ways to help others

  • Ability to work for at least 8 hours without sitting

  • Ability to lift furniture and other heavy items such as provisions up and down stairs, at least 50lbs, multiple times per day

  • Required to throw mooring lines from ship to pier

  • Must be available for work on all major holidays throughout employment this includes, but is not limited to, Memorial Day weekend, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, 4th of July weekend, Labor Day weekend, Air and Water Show, etc.

  • Per US Coast Guard regulations, must be a US Citizen or a Permanent Resident

  • Satisfactory background check

  • May be required to apply for a Transportation Workers ID Card

The successful Captains greet all guests and ensure each guest is attended to in an appropriate manner ensuring consistently high levels of safety, quality, service, and guest satisfaction, while maintaining a high level of profitability. Essential Functions: Cruise Execution * Rotate as cruise captain on cruises and ensure adherence to procedures detailed in the Product Management Guide. This includes thorough pre-cruise preparation, adherence to cruise scripts, supervision of crew, proper piloting of vessel, adherence to all Coast Guard rules and regulations, and guest satisfaction * Gather pertinent cruise event details from the other departments to ensure special guest requests are fulfilled thereby ensuring complete guest satisfaction * Conduct pre-cruise meetings and communicate to crew all necessary information regarding the cruise (special needs, boarding procedures, etc.) * Ensure that staff and guests adhere to all safety standards and procedures * Participate in the execution of the Safety Program, including emergency drills * Participate in the proper maintenance of all ship's systems and boarding facilities including but not limited to gangways, diesel, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, water (potable, raw, black, and gray), fire suppression, communications, and navigation * Ensure adherence to Coast Guard rules and regulations, and other federal and local rules and regulations * Ensure strict compliance to Emergency Response Plan * Execute other projects as assigned by management Operations Team Management * Recruit non-exempt operations staff (crew) when necessary to fill vacant positions * Deliver training to new crew * Schedule crew according to staffing matrix * Adhere to Company's performance management guidelines for all discipline and termination situations * Recommend to Marine Management the promotion of crew to full-time annual positions * Develop positive working relationships with city department heads and peers * Develop strong teamwork within the staff Guest Service * Resolve guest problems in conjunction with the on-duty Restaurant Manager utilizing strong guest service skills and exercising effective communication skills in keeping with company objectives and guest retention * Oversee the implementation and execution of safety programs in accordance with Coast Guard regulations and established Company policies Administration * Complete all shift records: checklist, logbook, payroll, and documentation of safety training * Ensure that incident reports are completed accurately and promptly * Participate in administration of payroll system including scheduling, checking, transmitting and processing * Execute collateral duties as assigned by Marine Management: uniforms, crew training, safety training, recruiting, scheduling crew and routine vessel maintenance * Schedule crew work periods to achieve maximum payroll efficiency * Attend all scheduled meetings Accountabilities: The successful Captain will personally contribute to the unforgettable guest experience, be favorably viewed by supervisors and peers, and be swift and efficient in the execution of their assigned duties.
