Job Description / Essential Elements: Print

Special Education - Learning Handicapped (LH) Definition Provide special educational setting and programs to enable handicapped children to function successfully in the least restrictive alternative. Major Duties and Responsibilities 1.

Teaches basic perceptual and academic skills on the level of the pupil's emotional, physical, and intellectual needs as determined by the IEP or the EAS. 2. Instructs students who are academically deficient in relation to their ability and who exhibit behavioral, neurological, and/or emotional problems of such severity that satisfactory progress cannot be expected in the regular classroom. 3. Provides individualized and small group instruction in academic areas and other areas as identified by student's annual goals. 4.

Involves students in individualized and small group discussions on problems which relate to the student's total growth and development. 5. Develops student competencies that promote personal hygiene, social skills, physical development, safety skills, and vocational awareness, as needed by each individual student. 6. Provides support services to the regular classroom where students are integrated. 7.

Seeks and/or plans outside curricular activities appropriate for special day class pupils when and if funding is available. 8. Gives pre and post assessment battery to each student as required by the Special Education Department. 9. Keeps student files current. 10.

Writes IEP's and annual reevaluation reports of each student. 11. Serves as a member of IEP Team for reevaluation. 12. Confers with parents and professional staff members on each student's progress. 13.

Responsible for instructing aides and other individuals assigned to the classroom in all required procedures related to classroom operation. 14. Attends workshops, staff meetings, and in-services. 15. Evaluates, purchases, and creates materials appropriate to students with learning handicaps with funds available. 16.

Acts as liaison with school community personnel on problems related to special day class students. 17. Helps students develop acceptable student behavior, attitudes, and social skills recommended by their IEP's. 18. Request and organizes materials to meet prescriptive recommendations. 19.

Arranges with school administrator an regular classroom teacher for integration of pupils into regular classes for instruction in areas where students can meet success, assumes monitoring of student's progress in regular class. 20. Input into general policies for classroom and equipment, instructional materials. 21. Performs other related duties as assigned.
