JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education: Must be a graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology Program.

Minimum Work Experience: Must possess a minimum of one year current operating room experience (student experience allowed).

Required Licenses / Certifications: BLS, National Certification by the Association of Surgical Technology highly recommended.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Understanding and following of hospital mission statement of high quality, high compassion, and high customer service.

Works collaboratively and positively with surgical staff, anesthesia staff, physicians, and staff from other departments. During surgery, will provide technical skills such as preparation, organization, and passing of surgical instruments. Will work in central processing as needed:

Cleans and processes instruments, ability to utilize various autoclaves and disinfection techniques, as well as gas sterilization and use of appropriate monitoring devices. Will assist in cleaning and preparation of operating rooms between cases and at terminal cleaning. Has knowledge of aseptic technique and the ability to create and protect a sterile field.

Assembles, prepares, checks equipment and instrumentation. Reports any malfunction or breakage of equipment and instrumentation. Assists the circulating nurse in preparation of the room by obtaining needed equipment and supplies, and opening sterile items.

Transports patients to surgery once proper patient identification and chart review have been completed. Ability to pick needed supplies/instrumentation for cases, assist in maintaining supplies and linen, put stock away. Answers phone in courteous manner, assists in scheduling cases.

Functions as preceptor to new orientees. Remains familiar with and follows policy/procedures and standards of practice for Perioperative nursing. Participates in evaluation/review of surgical policies as needed. Participates in in-service activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Develops, discusses, and communicates a realistic problem list (plan of care) for each patient in collaboration with each patient/family/significant other to address all identified needs. Demonstrates the skills and judgment necessary to implement medical plan of care, nursing interventions and procedures as necessary for the care of the patient.

Evaluates the identified problems, care provided, and patient's responses are reassessed in order to meet patient and family needs to ensure overall quality of care delivered. Maintains current knowledge/certification/licensure. Pursues professional growth and development.

Functions as a role model for current and new staff. Performs all responsibilities/duties required by the Surgical services division as defined in the scope of service, to ensure that the unique nature of the client is addressed. Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards.

Follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens. Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.

Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter and intradepartmentally to facilitate the department's/unit's ability to meet its goals and objectives. Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary. Verification of patient identity per hospital and JCAHO standards.

Accurately and promptly documents unusual occurreneces noted during the perioperative phase. Evaluates the identified problems, care provided and patient's responses are reassessed in order to meet patient and family needs to ensure overall quality of care delivered. Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of surgical procedures and instrumentation.
