Position Summary:

We are seeking independent and self motivated scientists to be a part of our dynamic CAR T cell Exhaustion Biology & Engineering Group at Lyell. We are looking for candidates to help establish experimental exhaustion models to interrogate underlying mechanisms driving CAR T cell exhaustion biology. The ideal candidates will bring new ideas to the table around mitigating CAR T cell exhaustion, think outside the box, and take initiative to dive into a fast paced new startup. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience working with human T cells, setting up in vitro cell-based functional assays as well as experience with in vivo and ex vivo analyses from tumor models. The candidate will collaborate closely with Lyells Protein Engineering, T Cell Engineering and Bioinformatics groups to develop and implement screening and high-volume data analysis. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to carry out independent and cross-functional work within a collaborative research environment, demonstrate creativity and apply critical thinking to help identify the next counter-exhaustion interventions for Lyells CAR T cell pipeline.

Essential Functions:

  • Independently design, execute, and troubleshoot experiments
  • Evaluate and implement a variety of immunology based assays to be integrated into project workstreams
  • Creative design of new assays for evaluating CAR T cell dysfunction in the context of hard to treat cancer indications must be ready for a challenge!
  • Willing to wear many hats as is expected in a start up environment
  • Work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team and help mentor others


Preferred Experience:

  • PhD in Immunology or related field (Scientist) and minimum 2-5 years (Scientist-II) or 5-8 years (Senior Scientist) of relevant experience in Immunology, Immuno-Oncology, or Immunotherapy.
  • Experience with human T cell culture.
  • Expertise with use of common in vitro immunology assays such as cytokine determinations, cellular proliferation, cytotoxicity assays, ELISA/MSD.
  • Experience developing, running, and analyzing high dimensional intracellular and surface flow cytometry panels.
  • Experience with adoptive T cell therapy models (CAR T or TCR T cells) preferred
  • Experience with gene-modification of immune cells using lentivirus, retrovirus, CRISPR-Cas9, or other techniques preferred
  • A background in T cell signaling and transcriptional networks is a plus!
  • Experience with sample preparation and data interpretation for bulk and single-cell gene expression analysis using qPCR, RNAseq, or ATACseq is a plus!
  • Proficiency in data analysis using Graphpad Prism, FlowJo, Excel or equivalents required
  • Proficiency using office software such as Word, Powerpoint or equivalents to generate reports and presentations required
  • Outstanding written, visual, and oral communication skills with a willingness to have ideas challenged and to challenge others ideas in a constructive, efficient and respectful way
