The Ferring Research Institute was established in San Diego, California in 1996 as the company's center of excellence for peptide research. More than 70 people work at its state-of-the-art research facility located in the heart of the Southern California biopharmaceutical community.

Summary:

Responsible for designing and developing translational research plans, and managing academic collaborations with major research centres to build translational R&D capabilities at Ferring.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide physiology expertise and key input into the design of translational research plans for upcoming clinical candidate drugs with biomarkers predictive of, or correlating with, clinical efficacy and pharmacodynamic biomarkers of target engagement in multiple therapeutic areas (Reproductive Medicine & Women's Health, Urology/Uro-Oncology and Gastroenterology/Hepatology,)

  • Work to understand genomic markers/predictive biomarkers/pharmacodynamic markers based on target biology, drug mechanism of action, target engagement, and patient population. Work in conjunction with other members of Drug Discovery and Translational Medicine teams on feasibility evaluation and execution.

  • Design experiments for in vitro, in vivo and ex vivo assays aiding in translation of preclinical data into relevant clinical endpoints and/or therapeutic action in human disease, as well as relevant biomarkers for decision-making in early clinical trials.

  • Identify and manage external collaborations with CROs, major academic research centers, and key opinion leaders for translational research.

  • Creation of strong organizational alignment for new research programs through effective presentation of scientific and business cases to key decision-makers within Ferring.

  • Representation at scientific conferences and via publication of novel research findings in high quality journals.

Requirements:

  • DVM or MD, ideally combined with a Ph.D. in a relevant scientific field (biology, pharmacology, or other biomedical sciences) with 7-10 years of relevant experience in translational research in the biopharmaceutical industry.

  • Proven/successful experience in working on research projects at all stages, up to and including transfer to Development, with input on translational aspects and biomarker research plans. Working knowledge of biomarker discovery and development: assay development/validation, clinical discovery of biomarkers, MoA research, and knowledge of biomarker technology platforms.

  • Deep knowledge of human or animal physiology and ability to design and interpret disease animal models, identification of clinical endpoints and biomarkers relevant for clinical studies.

  • Proven ability to collaborate with a network of academic partners in order to facilitate new idea generation and testing of biomarker hypotheses.

  • Experience working in cross-functional drug discovery teams with chemistry, pharmacology, and ADME/PK scientists and ability to collaborate with Translational Medicine and Clinical Development.

  • Record of innovative contributions to biomedical sciences as evidenced by a strong publication record. Ideally including first-authored publications in high quality journals and presentations at conferences.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written.

  • Ability to blend into the Ferring culture and embrace the Ferring philosophy.
