Job Description:

The primary role of this position is to provide Optical Systems Engineering expertise to Harris space-based programs. Harris on-orbit imaging and sensing systems operate in the visible and infra-red region of the spectrum.

Harris is searching for a talented Optical Systems Engineer to join the Harris team to help design and develop cutting edge space-based visual and infra-red sensors. Our highly skilled multi-expertise teams produce state of the art systems and products in support of many domains and varied technologies. The position provides critical support to our Fort Wayne team and on-site support to high-technology American and Canadian suppliers. Travel is estimated to be 10-20%.

This position will conduct key engineering activities, such as:

  • Perform and coordinate system-level Optical hardware and process trades with Harris and supplier teams to arrive at mutually agreeable spec-compliant solutions to technical problems.

  • Definition, design, development and performance verification of refractive and reflective optical systems, components, coatings, detectors, and processes, resulting in delivery of quality products meeting our customer's requirements

  • Optical budgets and sensitivities including wave-front error, MTF, line of sight, stray-light, SNR, SWaP, glint, spectral tuning/splitting, polarization, phase retrieval, image simulation, and radiometric calculations.

  • Creating and Managing Optical and Radiometric requirements and specifications for systems, assemblies, and components.

  • Hands-on test/review of data, materials and components to verify compliance to specifications


  • Bachelor degree in Optics, Systems Engineering, Physics, or related field with 12 years of HW design experience or an advanced degree with 10 years of design experience; or equivalent.
  • 5 years working knowledge of Zemax, Code V, FRED, and DOORS
  • 10 years experience in Systems requirements management (ex. performance verification, requirements allocation) for LEO/GEO environment; or equivalent.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Leadership capability working with 3-10 person teams focused on technical/cost/schedule optimization

  • Familiarity with ASAP and MatLab

  • Top Secret or TS/SCI Clearance

Essential Functions: * Directs all phases of CNI subsystem activities from proposal development through completion * Responsible for the cost, schedule and technical performance of CNI subsystem team * Participates in contract changes and negotiations at both the customer and supplier levels * Coordinates the preparation of proposals, proposal work statements, specifications, operating budgets and contract terms and conditions.
