Primary Function/Primary Goals/Objectives

Perform routine and research testing of the physical properties of liquid and powdered products, and ingredients per internal methods. Report results through a laboratory information management system or write scientific reports as required. Participate in research projects and assist with method development and validation under the guidance of senior scientists, project coordinator, or R&D manager.

Core Job Responsibilities

Conduct specified testing as requested on commercial and research products and enter test results into the laboratory information management system (LIMS). Interact with other scientific groups across the division to interpret testing results and develop conclusions. Provide testing demonstrations as requested by various scientific groups as a means of training and understanding of the testing.

Education

BS in Chemistry or Food Science

3 5 years of work experience with emphasis on physical properties

JOB DESCRIPTION: Senior Product Development Scientist - Bars, Liquids, and Powders Product Developer Primary Function Conceives, designs, conducts and leads advanced independent and multidisciplinary technical and formulation developments for challenging multiple global projects to make them feasible and ready for commercial production. Focuses and addresses challenging specific manufacturing technology issues related to product, process and technology systems. Provides technical leadership to prepare project and department plans, budgets, and capital requirements. Provides independent technical direction to plants and projects. Independently designs/executes development strategy for the projects, experiments, tests application hypotheses, determines priority and direction in projects; to include internal and external communication. Independently conducts global formulation development in compliance with various regulations. Applies advanced technology and manufacturing knowledge to projects. Major Responsibilities Translates science and regulatory requirements for challenging projects including breakthrough efforts into formulations that meet the total needs of the intended end use. Designs pilot plant runs to correlate the formula with the intended process. Designs to ensure that variations comply with all functional requirements and Abbott standards. Identifies alternative development and manufacturing technologies from literature, industry and industrial research centers and translates to Abbott manufacturing and product development applications, technologies, and manufacturing solutions. Evaluates ingredients global technical and compliance requirements for Abbott Nutrition manufacturing and use in products as applicable. Develops innovative technology solutions to resolve plant specific technical issues and participates in new plant line designs to provide product technical inputs. Assumes responsibility for technical inputs and approvals for SC, QA technical support, process validations and safety support and training of others in their operations. Supervise Scientists, technician(s) and operators in assigned projects. Interacts with other functions and shares information. Actively contributes to supply chain operational idea generation (improved process, improved gross margin). Provides technical input into Design-To-Value process. Education BS / MS, Food Science / Nutrition / Engineering or in related scientific field with 5-7 years practical related experience in nutrition manufacturing. PhD in a related scientific or engineering field with 4-5 years of practical application development in related nutrition manufacturing environment. Experience Has advanced knowledge / experience with food formulation science and food manufacturing systems. Has advanced technical writing skills to produce reports and documents and may evaluate the writing of others. Is experienced in design and execution of trials and test alternatives processes. Has knowledge of advanced manufacturing or development technology. Determines and executes workload against organizational priorities. Has advanced understanding of types of products, formulations, packages, ingredients and process requirements for commercial manufacture in supported facilities and can communicate this knowledge to internal or external teams. Trains new employees on technical procedures, operational processes and formulation development. Is able to develop experimental design incorporating thorough knowledge of global regulatory requirements as well as cross brand, technology, and formulation knowledge. Can utilize DTV or DOE as appropriate. Has advanced computer and instrumentation skills. Has advanced knowledge of the supported manufacturing plants and processes and is a recognized leader in the technical and resolution of plant problems or audits. Can assure scale-up implementation through sound, independent design. Accountability Budgets own time effectively to complete monthly activities and may budget time of support staff. Is accountable for timely project completion for complex and multiple projects. Maintains development expense for independent projects and communicates out-of-pocket expenses to management and project team. Accountable for independently summarizing data; formulating conclusions / recommendations and communicating these to management, project team and customer. Will provide technical direction and feedback to others and share knowledge throughout the organization. Mentors new hires and other Scientists. Actively works with multiple functions to transfer technology, science and initially developed products to the manufacturing facilities and scale-ups, utilizing advanced working knowledge of manufacturing. Assumes lead contact for supported third party manufacturing facilities, where requested. Leads and directs ingredient, packaging and process qualifications and validations and issues reports with recommendations. Supervisory/Management Presents results of projects both internally and externally; presents complex technical data to large, diverse groups. Trains others and troubleshoots operational problems. Leads project planning and process updates, and develops experimental design. Prepares and aligns goals with project / group goals. Is familiar with financial planning process and contributes to yearly project list and definition. Serves as recognized plant / operational technical lead on R&D projects and directs team on plant processes and requirements.
