To describe the responsibilities of the Limited Certifying Scientist within the Forensic Toxicology Drug Testing Laboratory. This position reports to the Positive Scientist Supervisor and Responsible Person. A Limited Certifying Scientist reviews analytical data to ensure accuracy, completeness and defensibility of testing results and reporting documents prior to release of a result report. The focus of this position is Brazilian hair testing, oral fluid testing and insurance/clinical testing.


This position works within the Employer Solutions system. The incumbent is directly responsible to:

  1. Certify negative, positive and rejected for testing results according to the Laboratory's Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Manual for Brazilian hair testing, oral fluid, clinical and insurance specimens.

  2. Ensure that all test results reported by the laboratory are accurate and legally defensible.

  3. Interact on a limited basis with clients, medical review officers, call center representatives and sales staff in a professional manner in order to address questions pertaining to the drug testing process.

  4. Interact with laboratory inspectors to demonstrate a detailed working knowledge of the lab SOPS, QC practices, analytical procedures, test theory, reporting procedures, corrective actions and applicable regulations pertaining to drug testing.

  5. Maintain a working knowledge of the accessioning procedures and protocols to ensure proper specimen and chain of custody handling.

  6. Maintain a working knowledge of the theory and practice of initial and confirmatory test methods used in the laboratory.

  7. Have a thorough understanding of all laboratory:

a) quality control practices and procedures.

b) data review processes

c) procedures for interpretation of test results

d) protocols for reporting results.

  1. Provide appropriate feedback to the Supervisor and Responsible Person in order to assist in maintaining an accurate SOP.

  2. Maintain a thorough understanding of all state and other regulatory requirements as they pertain to applicable aspects of forensic drug testing.

  3. Take proper remedial action in response to test systems being out of control limits or detecting aberrant test or quality control results.

  4. Function as a technical resource for department personnel in accessioning, screening and confirmation areas.

  5. Comply with all safety and regulatory requirements as defined and applicable.

  6. Follow work schedule as defined by the Supervisor.

  7. Actively participate in department meetings by providing constructive feedback.

  8. Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor and Responsible Person


Education Required:

  • A bachelor's degree in the chemical or biological sciences, medical technology, or equivalent.

Work Experience:

  • Four years of experience in laboratory work.


  • Knowledge of the methods and procedures used by the laboratory that are relevant to the results that the individual certifies.Training and experience in reviewing and reporting test results, maintenance of chain of custody, and understanding proper remedial action in response to the problems that may arise.

The Certifying Scientist Supervisor is the person who will assist the Responsible Person with the day to day, around the clock, operational, scheduling and administrative leadership of the Forensic Toxicology Certifying Scientist department. The incumbent will be responsible for the leadership, management and direction of negative and positive certifying scientist personnel on multiple shifts while working alongside certifying results. The incumbent will also interact with clients and legal personnel as an expert witness representing the company as to the validity of the testing. The incumbent will also interact with other managers and supervisors to provide and/or implement mutually beneficial solutions. This position reports to the Laboratory Director and Responsible Person, Forensic Toxicology.</p><p>JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:</p><ul><li><p>Accountable for ensuring that all the regulatory criteria are met and maintained daily within the Certifying Scientists area on a 24-hour basis as mandated by applicable federal, state and local regulations.</p></li><li><p>Responsible for meeting and providing unique and strategic alternatives for best practices as related to the Certifying Department.</p></li><li><p>Ensures that daily quality, production and scheduling measurements are in place to meet or exceed standards and goals. Additionally, will perform spot checks to ensure the standards are met.</p></li><li><p>Ensures that all safety and security procedures are administered and followed as mandated by HHS, OSHA and SOP for the Certifying Department.</p></li><li><p>Ensures that all direct reports are adequately trained as required by the SOP. Additionally, ensures that training is reviewed and continuing education is performed.</p></li><li><p>Lead, supervise and manage staff. Will hold staff accountable for their specific areas as prescribed by governing bodies, compliance programs, job descriptions, HHS, SOP, quality and production standards, safety and security policies and best practices.</p></li><li><p>Ensures that all certifying is performed accurately including releasing, resulting, calibrations, ID list verifications, chain of custody verifications for all negative and confirmation specimens while certifying results as mandated by HHS, SAMHSA and SOP regulations. Additionally, will interact with other departmental staff to ensure data quality and validity.</p></li><li><p>Will act as an expert legal witness testifying in court as to the validity and accuracy of testing. May involve court appearances.</p></li><li><p>May act as an &quot;Alternate Responsible Person&quot; as outlined by SAMHSA regulations. Additionally, will have knowledge of all areas in the Forensic Laboratory.</p></li><li><p>Ensures that staff is compensated accurately and regularly by monitoring and editing payroll data. Acts as a liaison between staff and payroll department.</p></li><li><p>Ensures that staff is reviewed informally and formally regularly for performance. Provides coaching, as needed.</p></li><li><p>Will be held accountable to the laboratory &quot;Responsible Person&quot; and partners with other managers, supervisors and staff to help transform problems into opportunities for a &quot;win- win&quot; situation for customers, staff and the company.</p></li><li><p>Communicates information above, across and down proper channels by attending or participating in meetings or training as required or needed.
