The Scientist II/Senior Scientist provides reprogramming expertise to the company to build ground-breaking cell lines, techniques, and protocols for gene-editing in model and non-model mammalian species. This position serves as a lead in the research and development of pluripotent stem cell (PSCs) derivation, gen-editing and clonal line derivation, as they pertain to species restoration. It reports to the VP, Animal Sciences.

This position is based in Dallas, TX and relocation assistance is available.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Spearhead groundbreaking research on optimizing the derivation, culture and manipulation techniques for a range of model and non-model mammalian species

  • Develop tools, techniques, and standardize protocols to derive, manipulate and analyze stem cells as part of Colossal's de-extinction efforts

  • Collaborates directly with Colossal's Biological Sciences team

  • Design and execute reprogramming experiments to derive and characterize iPSC from a range of species, develop functional assays, and analyze experimental workflows

  • Test novel culture conditions, sort, screen, expand and differentiate to lineages, according to latest protocols and newly developed approaches

  • Work with team members to create efficient targeting workflows from cellular reprogramming to gene-editing and analysis using multiple modalities

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Expertise reprogramming and deriving iPSC lines in multiple species and/or

  • Experience with embryology and ES cell derivation techniques

  • Experience optimizing stem cell culture, gene editing and clonal cell line production, QC and cryopreservation

  • Experience in the defined differentiation of iPSCs into various lineages

  • Experience isolating and establishing somatic cell lines from primary tissues

  • Experience with flow cytometry, immunostaining and fluorescent microscopy

  • Experience in molecular biology techniques: qPCR, qRT-PCR and gene editing assays

  • Experience with sequence analysis using multiple software platforms

  • Strong creative and analytical problem-solving skills

  • Data driven with an ability to trouble-shoot and optimize workflows

  • Enjoys the fast-paced startup environment and teamwork

  • Practiced interpersonal and critical thinking skills

  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Strong emotional intelligence and passion for building relationships across all levels

  • Ability to function well in a growth-oriented, nimble environment

  • Communicates clearly both written and orally, so others can understand

Education and Experience:

  • MA/MS/DVM/PHD in biological sciences, veterinary medicine, or any related field

  • Post-graduate training or relevant research experience in an academic or commercial environment - hands on experience with reprogramming/deriving and differentiating ipscs is required.

  • 5+ years hands-on expertise in mammalian cell culture systems and iPSCs

  • Candidates with significant, post-graduate experience directing high performing teams may be considered for employment at a Senior Scientist level
