Job Description and Responsibilities

Zymergen is hiring a scientist to join the Metagenomics group on the Development Team. This scientist will work in collaboration with the Products department on early stages Products programs prior to initiation of a full strain improvement program. This role includes working on target molecules at many stages in the early Products pipeline, from collaborating on target molecule ideation, literature evaluation of feasibility and risks, and wet-lab experiments to reduce these key program risks (e.g. stability, toxicity, pathway proof-of-concept, host selection).

The ideal candidate possesses a broad knowledge of metabolism, metabolic engineering, secondary metabolites, and a basic understanding of chemistry/biochemistry to be able to collaborate effectively with organic chemists and materials scientists to arrive at biological molecules which possess desired structural moieties/properties. A successful candidate would apply their knowledge of metabolic pathways and strain engineering to guide and the team towards their goals.

Immediate responsibilities include:

  • Performing literature and database surveys to evaluate project feasibility.

  • Using knowledge of microbial metabolism and phenotype analysis data to select a broad array of targets for strain improvement.

  • Collaborating with materials scientists and organic chemists to iterate toward optimal matches between molecular targets, application, and Zymergen capabilities.

  • Performing diverse wet-lab experiments aimed at evaluating or reducing project risk prior to handoff to Development-Projects (e.g. stability, pathway proof-of-concept, host selection).

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Hands-on, wet-lab experience with metabolic engineering of microbes for production of small molecules or genetic engineering methodologies (e.g. DNA assembly, sequencing, transformation, integration, PCR)

  • PhD in relevant Life Sciences field

  • Good understanding of cellular physiology and metabolism for a variety of eukaryotic and prokaryotic microbes, e.g. on processes associated with target molecule production, including redox metabolism, energy usage, product transport, impact on growth and health, etc.

  • Understanding of cellular metabolites with ability to leverage resources to evaluate the feasibility of producing selected compounds through stain engineering.

  • Effective at collaboration, enjoys working in a team, sharing work, and getting help or helping others.

  • Ability to work in a large groups and communicate with key stakeholders on technical feasibility and timelines of projects.

  • Systematic & problem-solving approach to projects

Additional Skills of Interest:

  • Capable of developing and/or utilizing software scripts (e.g. python, JMP, R, SQL) to handle data

  • Molecular Biology and Biochemistry

  • Proficiency with techniques used to build large DNA assemblies from a library of DNA parts

  • Expertise using a variety of DNA transformation techniques into both eukaryotes and prokaryotes

  • Skill with standard methodologies to isolate and purify proteins and characterize activities.

  • Target molecule production and detection:

  • Experience using a variety of fluorescence, spectroscopic, and chromatographic measurement techniques to detect target molecules

  • Familiarity with a variety of bioreactor operation modes (batch, fed batch, continuous).

  • Advanced Tools:

  • Capable of developing and/or utilizing software scripts (e.g. python, JMP, R, SQL) to handle data

  • Adept at utilizing automation to assist with complicated or lengthy workflows

  • Capable of developing software scripts to assist designing experiments and processing data

  • Competent in using statistics to strengthen experimental design and enable robust data analysis

Previous experience in the field of synthetic biology is not essential.
