We are seeking a skilled electrophysiologist to develop and use cutting-edge methods for recording across the mouse brain during behavior. Such brainwide electrophysiology experiments will be a major focus of a new research division within the Allen Institute, launching in 2021. The scientist will be responsible for running experiments with 10,000 or more recording sites and analyzing these datasets to generate insights about how defined neurons across brain regions interact to produce behavior. The ideal candidate will be focused on scientific and technical excellence, highly motivated, agile, and team oriented.

Essential Functions

  • Perform in vivo extracellular electrophysiology experiments using high-density electrodes

  • Pilot new methods for brainwide recordings

  • Collaborate with a team of scientists and engineers to build and validate a next-generation probe insertion system

  • Analyze large-scale datasets with the goal of understanding the mechanisms of multi-regional neural communication

  • Train others to perform novel procedures

  • Present results internally, via talks and progress reports, and to the external community, via conferences and publications

Required Education and Experience

  • PhD in neuroscience, biology, biomedical engineering or a related field; or an equivalent combination of degree and experience

  • 3 years of postdoctoral experience

  • Proficiency in collecting and analyzing in vivo electrophysiology data

  • Experience with stereotactic surgical procedures

Preferred Education and Experience

  • PhD in neuroscience, biology, biomedical engineering or a related field; or an equivalent combination of degree and experience

  • 5+ years of postdoctoral experience

  • Experience with rodent behavioral training

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong publication record

  • Ability to write high-quality, reusable code in Python or Matlab

  • Familiarity with modern software development best practices (e.g., git, GitHub)

  • Basic knowledge of electrical circuits, digital signal processing, and mechanical engineering

Work Environment

  • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or reach

  • Daily procedures involving laboratory mice, including behavioral training and survival surgery

  • Possible exposure to chemical, biological, or other hazardous substances

Physical Demands

  • Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and lab equipment

We are looking for a passionate, hard-working, and talented AS who has experience building mission critical, big-data analytics solutions that deliver actionable insights. * MS in in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science (Machine Learning), Electrical Engineering, Physics or a related quantitative field. * 3+ years of hands-on experience in predictive modeling. * Knowledge of Time Series Modeling. * Strong algorithm development experience. * Proficient in scripting languages such as Python, Scala, Spark and R. * Strong communication and data presentation skills.
