About Willow Biosciences:
Willow Biosciences is a synthetic biology company focused on the development of biobased processes for the production of ingredients, including those for consumer care, food & beverage, and pharmaceuticals. Our scientists engineer microbes to produce plant-, animal-, and petrochemical-derived ingredients through precision fermentation. Our processes are more sustainable, secure, and cost-effective than traditional extraction or chemical synthesis routes and typically provide final products in higher purity.
Join our team:
It's fun to work in a company where people truly believe in what they are doing. At Willow Biosciences, we are committed to developing high-purity ingredients for cosmetics, food, and pharmaceutical products. We work hard, we're serious about what we do, and we like to have fun too.
Job Listing: Scientist, Chemical Development
We are seeking a Scientist to support the activities of the Chemical Development team. The individual will primarily focus on the evaluation and optimization of biocatalytic and biosynthetic processes for the production of small molecules across multiple scales. This individual will have a strong chemistry or biochemistry background and in-depth knowledge of organic chemistry principles such as thermodynamics and kinetics, as well familiarity with biocatalysis and biosynthetic pathways.
Education: M.S. with 2-4 years of working experience or PhD with 0-2 years experience in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field.
Job Description:
Design and conduct experiments in low to medium-throughput
Handling of microbial cultures across multiple scales
Design and optimization of enzymatic assays at shake flask scale
Development/use of analytical methods for identification and quantification of target compounds
Design, establish and validate scalable downstream isolation routes for target molecules with evaluation of purity
Proper record-keeping and data analysis
Preparation of documentation for tech transfer of chemical processes
Effectively communicate/present work and analysis to audiences with diverse technical backgrounds.
Offer strategic recommendations based on interpretation of data for strain engineering/fermentation process decisions
Mentor Laboratory Technician, Research Assistants, and Research Associates
Evaluate new technologies that will further advance/enable project goals
Required Skills:
The candidate should have a good knowledge of organic chemistry principles (chirality, catalysis, kinetics, thermodynamics, mechanism, synthesis) in addition to strong organic chemistry skills (chemical handling, purification, and characterization)
Experience with microbial fermentation for the production of small molecules (microtiter and/or bench scale).
Experience with analytical software (ChemStation, Masshunter, Chromeleon) and instrumentation (Agilent UHPLC-DAD, Agilent RapidFire MS, Agilent GC-MS, Thermo Triple Quad)
Relevant full-time biotech or pharmaceutical industry experience within R&D or manufacturing is a plus
Knowledge of biosynthetic pathways and enzymology is a plus
Use of liquid handlers/other automation used in HTP screening is a plus
Understanding of process chemistry (reaction up-scaling, safety, and downstream processing); design of experiments (DoE) implementation; molecular and directed evolution are useful but not essential
Other requirements:
The ability to work in a highly parallel manner, ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team; critical thinking and attention to detail; ability to plan, prioritize responsibilities, and multi-task; excellent housekeeping and safety practices; excellent communication, documentation, and organization skills.
Physical Demands:
Remaining in a seated or standing position for extended periods
Performing repetitive tasks with hands, fingers, and wrists
Use of standard lab PPE (lab coats, safety glasses, and gloves)
Position Type:

Work Authorization:
Benefits and Perks:
Healthcare benefits - medical, vision, dental
Paid vacation and company holidays
Life / AD&D, Short-term and Long-term Disability Insurance
