Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute research experiments in the context of the Laboratory's overall research program including planning, organizing, and design of projects in the Malaria Cell Biology Section including: o Identify the factors that are pivotal for the invasion of Plasmodium vivax in Duffy-negative erythrocytes. o Establish the interaction of DBP and EBP to Duffy negative erythrocytes. o Determine of the Ligand-receptor interaction that is critical for Plasmodium sporozoite invasion into the Mosquito salivary gland. o Elucidate the role of P. vivax AMA1 antigen in the invasion of the host cells. o Evaluate the use of Duffy binding protein as a vaccine for recently emerging P. vivax infection in Africa.• Develop strategies for maintaining adequate space/facilities for ongoing and projected research studies.• Collaborate with industry/academia to conduct laboratory/clinical research and apply the results of the research.• Analyze and interpret research data, communicate results and methods in reports, presentations, and manuscripts. Prepare presentations of research.• Develop new techniques, products, or practices.

    Hypothesize on any discrepancies and recommend changes to protocols. Create new research protocols.• Maintain accurate, daily records of experiments and results in pen in bound laboratory notebooks and in electronic databases; make minor modifications or adaptations to established methods, procedures, and/or techniques to solve problems in the workplace.• Calibrate and operate a variety of laboratory instruments.• Prepare various media, stock supplies, and other reagents for use in the laboratory.• Perform a variety of complex procedures involving various techniques in molecular biology related to malaria parasites and the mosquitoes which transmit them. Because these parasites are human pathogens, some of these procedures will require operating in a BSL2 environment.• Write report(s) of findings, state methods and procedures, including any modifications employed, specimens and materials involved, and results of experiments.

    Contribute to preparation of scientific manuscripts for publication.• Perform quality control of the laboratory including upkeep and routine maintenance of equipment upon government approval. Required to handle biological materials, infectious agents, biological wastes.• Perform computer analysis of data and use computers and various specialized software programs to prepare data for publication.

Qualifications

  • PhD, MD, or dual degree required.• Minimum of five (5) years of experience working with human malarial parasites is required.• Demonstrates knowledge of maintaining accurate and detailed records.• Demonstrates knowledge of proper laboratory disposal methods and safety procedures.
