The Coastal Ecosystems Section of the South Florida Water Management District has a need for a Part-Time Scientist (20 hours per week) with data management and analysis skills to join our group of estuarine scientist and modelers. The Scientist 3 position in the Coastal Ecosystems Section (CES) supports research and monitoring projects critical to evaluating response of estuarine ecological conditions to freshwater inflows.

The primary responsibility will be to support CES's field sampling program and data management. This position provides support to water quality, phytoplankton, and zooplankton monitoring and research in the Northern Estuaries, as well as long-term monitoring of CERP estuarine indicators of restoration progress including seagrass and oysters. Additional work includes mesocosm studies to fine tune our knowledge of key indicator species' response to the quantity, timing, duration and return frequency of freshwater inflows.

Duties of the position include field support to on-going and future field studies, processing field samples in the laboratory, maintaining and calibrating equipment, maintaining ecological databases, and supporting project managers with budget management and contractual expenditure updates in the District's financial and project software systems. In addition, the position will complete statistical analysis of data and contribute to scientific reports and manuscripts.

Data generated from these projects support the District's mission to provide timely results to assist upper management in weekly operations, monthly ecological updates to the Governing Board and our many stakeholders, as well as long-term environmental restoration and water management decision making based on sound science.

This position may be filled at the Scientist 2 level based on candidate qualifications.

Employment Guidelines:

Scientist 3: Typically has a Bachelor's Degree in the natural sciences preferably estuarine, marine or environmental, graduate degree is desirable and 2+ years' experience in data management and analysis.

Geographic Information Systems, mapping and spatial analysis skills are also desirable. Occasional field work in estuarine environments and excellent organizational skills are required.

Scientist 2: Typically has a Bachelor's Degree in the natural sciences preferably estuarine, marine or environmental, graduate degree is desirable and 1+ years' experience in data management and analysis.

Geographic Information Systems, mapping and spatial analysis skills are also desirable. Occasional field work in estuarine environments and excellent organizational skills are required.

Licenses

Valid State of Florida Driver's License is required.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment

Due to the District's response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role.

Composition of office and field work, with regular exposure to a hot and humid environment in remote and heavy vegetative areas.
