A Scientist 1 at Hempel provides expertise and leadership through participation in setting the work group direction. This is an advanced level position for science degreed laboratory personnel with at least 5+ years of coatings experience. This position requires the ability to carry out experiments and complete tasks with a high degree of uncertainty with an expert level of judgment and independent thinking

You also have the option to work a 4/10 schedule, condensing work into Monday through Thursday, which grants Fridays off.

  • Responsible for large, well-defined areas of technical focus as defined by technology, market area or customer.

  • Proficient understanding of formulation techniques and raw materials in multiple technology areas.

  • Consistently identify and implement formulation, process, and testing upgrades to improve productivity.

  • Provides oversight and direction for multiple Customization or New Solution/Technology Projects as either a formal or informal leader.

  • Leadership of complex technical support to internal and external customers including problem resolution.

  • Reading and interpretation of patents as required to support technology projects.

  • Serves as primary technical contact for external customers.

What you need to be successful in this role:

  • It is a prerequisite that the candidate has a strong background in industrial coatings formulation and some knowledge of formulating water-based coatings is valued.

  • Demonstrates a high level of leadership with a proven track record of significant successful project commercialization or technological advancements.

  • Effective and proactive communication with Work Contacts such as peers, manager, senior management and other internal departments including others of lesser interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work to a timeline, efficiently communicate obstacles and self-prioritize work activities in a low structure environment.

  • Advanced level of paint formulation knowledge in multiple technologies as demonstrated by the ability to make complex formulation adjustments, including raw material choice, to modify properties as required with no supervision.

  • Advanced level knowledge of testing procedures as demonstrated by the ability to operate advanced equipment or perform complex testing as well as provide leadership and mentoring for others.

  • Ability to perform advanced mathematical calculations.

  • Advanced understanding operation of experimental design software.

  • Ability to complete reporting requirements such as maintaining a laboratory notebook and/or generating customer ready reports using Microsoft Office to accurately document activities.

  • Ability to work well in a team environment.

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of specialized testing for color vision may be required.

  • BA, BS or MS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, or related field

  • 5+ years of experience in Coatings or a closely related field

  • Expertise in a wide range of analytical techniques and instrumentation, with proficiency in method optimization, maintenance, and troubleshooting is a plus.
