Summary:

Goldbelt Professional Services, LLC is seeking a Scientific Writer to work within the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This position will support a wide range of administrative tasks for the NCIRD business service needs. This work will be performed at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Roybal Campus in Atlanta, GA. The CDC is the nation's premier health promotion, prevention, and preparedness agency. The  Scientific Writer will report to Goldbelt Professional Services leadership to ensure the execution of timely, high-quality deliverables for the client.

The Scientific Writer shall provide service to all divisions with NCIRD as part of its scientific quality improvement processes. NCIRD publishes over 250 scientific articles each year.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  • Read and edit manuscripts being prepared for submission and publication. Technical editing includes substantive editing of manuscript for publication, working with authors to revise their manuscripts according to target journal standards.

  • Ensure that the components of a science article are complete and distinct from one another.

  • Assist authors to clarify their ideas and to organize and structure their manuscripts for online presentation. Communicating in a professional yet friendly manner, explaining clearly why particular changes are suggested or needed, including the following:

  • Consult with authors to clarify their ideas and organize the structure of their manuscripts effectively.

  • Advise authors on logical flow, tone, and consistency, warning of possible internal inaccuracy or content errors.

  • Advise when further data or citations are needed.

  • Suggest (when appropriate) the addition or removal of tables, figures, photographs, or video clips to clarify a point or add interest.

  • Suggest (when appropriate) correcting internal inconsistencies, such as text-to-table discrepancies, and content errors, such as mathematical mistakes.

  • The contractor must understand and keep abreast of new methods and developments within the organization:

  • Plan, manage and execute multiple tasks.

  • provide independent information gathering, reliability assessments and objective analysis.

  • Coordinate operational and procedural approaches based on customer process requirements.

  • Processes data, perform analysis and complete survey reports to provide detailed feedback.

Qualifications

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

  • Demonstrate excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.

  • Experience collaborating with leadership and cross-functional teams.

  • Scientific or Public health communication skills, including ability to communicate data and provide timely and credible recommendations.

  • Ability to effectively communicate technical language to non-expert audiences, both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to quickly synthesize and communicate information in a concise, digestible way.

  • Experience liaising across teams with varying expertise and skill sets.

  • Advanced use of Adobe and Microsoft Office Tools (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher, SharePoint).

  • Demonstrated familiarity with scientific terminology, regulatory writing styles, standards & procedures, and Government Plain language.

  • Ensuring factually accurate materials or edits for factual content.

  • Provide guidance and direction regarding publications in support of scientific/medical subject-matter areas, including the natural or social sciences or other fields.

  • Apply the principles, practices, methods, and techniques of English composition, including the use of logic, consistency of style, parallel construction, use of transitions, and similar elements to restructure, revise, and rewrite material for better understanding by the target audience.

  • Understanding of Section 508 accessibility compliance.

  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently, be solution-oriented, motivated, and committed to customer and company success.

  • Ability to handle a variety of constituencies, manage multiple tasks simultaneously and thrive in a complex environment while balancing multiple competing priorities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Public Health or related field.

  • 4+ years' experience of technical or scientific writing/editing.

  • Highly detailed and organized with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Experience in using Microsoft Office Tools.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain CDC Clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working with the CDC is highly desired to understand the culture and environment.

  • Experience with research paper manuscript writing and scientific processes.
