Job Summary:

The University of Colorado Cancer Center and the Department of Surgery are seeking a full-time (1.0 FTE ) Scientific Grant Writer/Editor at the rank of Instructor or Senior Instructor. The Scientific Grant Writer/Editor for the CU Cancer Center will play a crucial role in helping the Cancer Center achieve its strategic goal of expanding the portfolio of cancer-focused multi-component, multi-disciplinary grants held by Cancer Center members, as well as supporting early career investigators in their efforts to secure their first R01-equivalent grant. This position will bring knowledge gained through graduate education and training, and expertise honed through direct professional experience with NIH and other national sponsors' grant requirements and review processes to the development of complex multi-project grant proposals. Individuals in this role will provide leadership to teams of investigators to guide the writing, editing, and reviewing of team science grant proposals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Write, review, and edit biomedical research grants in collaboration with diverse investigator teams

  • Support the Cancer Center Support Grant by serving as the primary editor and authoring administrative sections as needed

  • Collaborate with Investigators to develop the narratives for technical and non-technical components of grants including specific aims, research strategies (significance, innovation, approach), diversity, equity and inclusion components, education and outreach plans, data management and sharing, administrative cores, components on the protection of human subjects, inclusion of women, minorities and across the lifespan, and protection of vertebrate animals, and other sections as required by the funding opportunity announcement

  • Advise investigators on best strategies to convey significance, impact, and innovation of their research plan

  • Provide constructive feedback to investigators to improve clarity, logic, and persuasiveness of grant proposals

  • Consult with investigators in responding to critiques for grant proposal resubmissions

  • Provide comprehensive review and editing of grant proposals written by early career investigators identified by Center leadership for focused mentoring and career development

  • Maintain documents that describe the Center's research resources and capabilities to support grant applications and develop template language for common proposal elements

  • Assist with the development of processes and procedures to support internal peer review and feedback on rough draft proposals

  • Participate in internal and external advisory board processes

  • Offer grant writing seminars to Center members

  • Participate in Center initiatives designed to promote scientific collaboration that lead to growth in Center members' cancer-focused research portfolios

Work Location:

This role is eligible for a hybrid schedule. A remote work arrangement may be an option for this position.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Instructor or Senior Instructor, based on experience and qualifications as indicated below:

Instructor:

  • Master's in a biomedical sciences field or related field
  • 2 years of professional experience in scientific and medical writing or as a journal editor

Senior Instructor:

  • Master's in a biomedical sciences field or related field
  • 6 years of professional experience in scientific and medical writing or as a journal editor

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in a biomedical sciences field

  • Experience in a biomedical research institution

  • Experience working as an independent consultant or medical writer

  • Experience as a professional editor at a scientific journal

  • Advanced data visualization skills

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with faculty and staff at all levels throughout the Center and the institution

  • Exemplary oral and written communication skills with the ability to articulate clear, persuasive and concise thoughts in a well-organized structure

  • Extensive knowledge of scientific writing, editing, and grammar

  • Ability to develop clear project descriptions and scientific rationales that are written to be responsive to sponsors' funding criteria

  • Excellent critical analysis skills

  • Flexible self-management skills enabling one to plan, develop and complete multiple projects and complex tasks within committed timelines and established deadlines

  • Exceptionally detail-oriented and capable of noting and correcting discrepancies in statements and data across multiple components of a grant proposal

  • High level proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), EndNote, and BioRender

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

Instructor: $90,000 to $95,000

Senior Instructor: $115,000 to $120,000

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
