QUALIFICATIONS TO APPLY:

SHOULD have an academic major in Biology, Chemistry or a science related field, OR have 32 semester hours, including 19 semester hours of upper division credits in Biology, Chemistry or a science related field AND passing Praxis II scores on the Praxis II General Science 5435, Biology 5235, or Chemistry 5245, OR have passing Praxis II scores on the Praxis II General Science 5435, Biology 5235, or Chemistry 5245 with a minimum of ten to eighteen semester hours of upper level courses in the subject to teach. Those wanting to teach middle school (grades 4-8) only are required to have passing scores on the Middle School Science Praxis (5442).

The Praxis II Exam is designed for college majors. In other words, the persons with the best chance of passing the exam will have a high concentration (20-30 semester hours) of college courses in Science. Passing the Praxis is the only way for long-term employment.

Must have a minimum 2.50 G.P.A. on a 4.0 scale on the undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education. Persons with Master's Degrees need a minimum GPA of 3.0. Applicants with a GPA between 2.0 and 2.74 can apply but will have to make a HIGHER ALTERNATE SCORE on the Praxis. Applicants should attach their Bachelor's degree transcript and Praxis Scores to their online application or Master's if they have one. Applications with transcripts and Praxis scores will be considered first.

If the appropriate science praxis is not passed before hiring, it MUST be passed by the end of the Emergency Certificate in order to be rehired.

Expense for exam is borne by the teacher. Four college courses are required for continued employment from an Alabama College or University in order to mover to a Provisional Certificate, and those costs are borne by the teacher also. Applicants who have already passed their Praxis are eligible for a Conditional Certificate.

The duties include but are not limited to:

  • Establishes objectives and plans learning experiences.

  • Implements activities using a variety of techniques that utilize instructional time to meet objectives.

  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.

  • Exhibits positive human relations skills.

  • Evaluates the educational program and/or student progress.

  • Communicates with parents/guardians, colleagues, and community groups.

  • Demonstrates proficiency in written and oral communication.

  • Maintains and submits records and reports.

  • Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local board policies, and state and federal rules and regulations.

  • Engages in personal professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and leadership.

  • Follows suggestions and instructions of various school system mentors and supervisors.

Salary Range: From/To As per State Matrix, depending on degree and experience. Bachelor's beginning pay - $44,226.00.

Applicants selected for certified positions must have undergone an ABI/FBI criminal history background check (fingerprinting administered through sites selected and approved by the MCPSS and State of Alabama Education Department) and been declared suitable and fit to teach under state law. Applicants selected must also pass a drug-screening test via forms provided by Human Resources during the selection process.
