Under general supervision, the Science Laboratory Technician performs technical work in a college laboratory setting, including ordering, receiving, stocking, maintaining and issuing laboratory supplies and equipment.
Duties & Responsibilities

Assists in the maintenance and operation of a laboratory stock room;
Prepares and issues materials and equipment for student use in laboratory experiments;
Keeps records on pieces of equipment loaned to students;
Maintains inventory of items in stock;
Prepares sets of experimental supplies, equipment and apparatus for assignment to individual students;
Maintains laboratory and storeroom in a clean and orderly condition
Cleans and repairs glassware and laboratory apparatus;
Prepares purchase requisitions for supplies and equipment needed by the department;
Receives, inventories and stores supplies and equipment;
Designs apparatus and prepares stock solutions as required for instructors' demonstrations;
Prepares and issues chemicals;
Repairs, maintains, tests and calibrates various electrical, electronic and mechanical equipment;
May supervise student assistants;
Prepares and dispenses culture media as required by instructors;
Mixes, bottles and labels strains and reagents;
Maintains and performs minor repairs, including necessary calibrations, on equipment and apparatus;
Manages hazardous waste from lab experiments
May assist in preparation of departmental budget;
Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
1.Satisfactory completion of a minimum of 12 semester units in the chemistry field from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and qualifying experience which demonstrates the skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties for this position. (Must submit a copy of college transcripts with application.)
2.Two (2) plus years experience working in a laboratory and using standard laboratory equipment.
3.Experience keeping accurate records and maintaining inventory control.
4.Applicant must have demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college staff, faculty, and students
Desirable Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in organic or analytical chemistry.
Strong writing and computational skills.
Knowledge of laboratory safety and willing to participate in further training if necessary.
Knowledge of hazardous materials handling and disposal method, MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) and willingness to participate in further training, if necessary.
Knowledge and competency in using computer software, but not limited to MS Excel and Word.
Experience working with students.
ABILITY TO:
Ability to perform routine and analytical determination;
Learn factors involved in purchasing science laboratory supplies and equipment;
Prepare demonstration and laboratory set-ups;
Order, receive, and issue supplies, materials, and equipment;
Operate, maintain and repair technical laboratory equipment;
Analyze laboratory procedures and make suggestions for improvements;
Maintain records of supplies and equipment;
Do research as needed.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

REQUIRED FOR ALL EMPLOYEES
Tuberculosis Examination: Prior to employment, the successful candidate will be required to submit evidence (either skin test or X-ray report) of being free of tuberculosis within the past sixty (60) days. The TB test is a condition of employment and any expense must be borne by the successful candidate.
Fingerprinting Requirement:
As a condition of employment, all employees working for community colleges in the State of California are required to be fingerprinted within the first ten (10) working days of the date of employment pursuant to Education Code Section 88024. The District Office of Human Resources processes fingerprints electronically. During the employment intake process, new employees will be given information to have their fingerprints taken at another location.
Immigration Requirement: According to the Immigration Reform and Control Act, the Peralta Community College District is required to verify that all new employees are:
A citizen or national of the United States;
An alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States; or
An alien authorized by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service to work in the United States.
All new employees are required to complete and sign a verification form and provide documentation attesting that he/she is a United States citizen, national, or an alien lawfully authorized to work in the United States.
District Policy: A Social Security Card will be required following selection and prior to completion of the hiring process. The employment process cannot be completed without a copy of the Social Security Card on file in the Office of Human Resources.
