Science Adventure School is a 4-day, 3-night adventure-based, outdoor science school dedicated to empowering and educating West Virginia's youth. We integrate adventure sports-driven STEM curriculum with a hands-on, engaging environmental curriculum at the world-class Summit Bechtel Reserve.

With a distinct focus on student development through experiential education, Science Adventure School offers high quality instruction and meaningful experiences to inspire inquiry, instill confidence, and empower the leaders of tomorrow. SAS successfully integrates three innovative programs that actively engage youth by providing opportunities that instill confidence though experience, inspire scientific inquiry, foster new relationships, and reaffirm connections to nature. Our program design features:

WVU Science Behind the Sport has developed a series of educational programs that demonstrate the fundamental principles of STEM in the context of adventure activities like rock climbing, zip lining, cycling, and archery. Developed by the West Virginia Water Research Institute, our ecology curriculum focuses on four disciplines of environmental research: phenology, freshwater ecosystems, wetland ecology, and ecohydrology. Experiential education curriculum designed to help students as they transition into middle school and emerge from our orientation program as confident, motivated, and united.

Additionally, we're able to enhance effectiveness by delivering our program in the outdoor environment where students are also learning camping skills and working in small groups. A teacher from the students' school and an older student mentor (during some programs) will also be actively engaged with each group as to build a healthy school community. We are also working with w PhD student to evaluate the effectiveness of many of the facets of the program, so we can continue to improve as we grow.

VIEW JOBS 10/13/2019 12:00:00 AM 2020-01-11T00:00 West Virginia has historically been one of the poorest states in the nation, and has been particularly economically challenged in recent decades. Per the U.S. Census, 17.5% of West Virginians fell below the poverty line in 2015. Effective strategies to address poverty in WV rest squarely with improving health, educational attainment, and innovation, per the West Virginia Center for Budget and Policy. Work carried out by the VISTA will address health and education by supporting local programs that work to improve health and education outcomes in WV communities. It is challenging for communities without much staff and/or resources to find the data they need to support their applications for grant funding or even programmatic development. We will help these local organizations by building a database of local data available through a website portal and dashboard. We have collected the data and are documenting it, but we would like to be able to share this data with other organizations so that we are not the only ones benefiting from it. Once we have the data and dashboard prepared, we will reach out to networks of non-profits and local governments to tell them about the availability. We also will develop a tutorial to show them how easy it will be to access the data that they need to strengthen their arguments, improve programs, and apply for more grant monies. There are numerous organizations, agencies, and local and national foundations working to address poverty and health in West Virginia; however, most of them to do not have the means to find and analyze data. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is well suited to this task given their awareness of how systems and social contexts shape individual behaviors within communities.
