The Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf (ENCSD) is a state school that provides a specialized learning environment for deaf, hard of hearing, and deaf-blind students.   During the regular 10-month School Year, the ENCSD offers students an academic setting with low classroom ratios, career and vocational skill development, technology-based programming, and an overall accessible environment for learning through American Sign Language.

In addition, the ENCSD offers a full-service boarding program for students residing outside of Wilson County.   The ENCSD seeks to promote both intentional and experiential learning to provide continued advancement in student academic achievement and social/emotional well-being.  

To qualify for the $7500 Sign On Bonus, candidates must be deemed Highly Qualified.

Highly Qualified is defined as having obtained a NC DPI Certified Teaching license with the DHH (Deaf and Hard of Hearing/88088) endorsement.

This is a 12-month position that follows the 10-month Academic Calendar (Aug-May).

The school is currently recruiting a School Educator, working title:  Testing Coordinator/Lead Teacher . This position will serve as the Lead Teacher and will be paid a Lead Teacher Supplement of $200 per month.

The primary purpose of this position is to implement the special education appraisal process by assessing the educational learning styles and program needs of students receiving special education services and to provide diagnostic information to instructional personnel to deliver the most appropriate programs for students who are deaf and/or hard or hearing and/or with additional disabilities. The Testing Coordinator also performs a variety of professional, technical, and administrative tasks in order to direct the administration of local, state, and national standardized testing of students.  The Testing Coordinator also assists school staff with preparation for test administrations and is responsible for scanning and scoring local, state and national standardized tests, as applicable and provides test results and consultation regarding the interpretation of test results in order to improve student achievement.

Thorough knowledge of rules and regulations regarding the administration of standardized tests in the NC public schools

Considerable knowledge of state and local testing requirements

Considerable knowledge of the proper conditions, practices and procedures for testing

Demonstrated skill with interpreting testing results

Ability to work closely with school administrators to select, administer, and score a variety of educational assessments as a part of Exceptional Children's initial evaluations and re-evaluations

Collect and organize relevant assessment data to write educational evaluation reports

Assist school administrators with the distribution, collection, and scoring of various behavioral and adaptive rating scales

Assist school administrators with collecting various other eligibility components, such as medical evaluations, observations, parent/teacher interviews, and social developmental histories

Participate in IEP meetings to interpret results and assist in making eligibility and IEP decisions

Provide ongoing consultative services to schools, community partners, and parents regarding students' educational needs

Participate in school problem solving teams and provide consultation regarding interventions and progress monitoring

Other duties as assigned by the School Director or School Principal

Bachelor's degree in education and three (3) to five (5) years of experience administering standardized tests and interpreting results .

Must have North Carolina Teaching Certification/License or credentials to attain NC certification. PLEASE ATTACH YOUR NC DPI TEACHING LICENSE.

Preference will be given to applicants who are licensed as an educator in the State of NC and are credentialed to teach deaf and/or hard of hearing students in the content area desired.  The use of American Sign Language, proficient to communicate, is also a preference but is not required.

The Eastern NC School for the Deaf will offer a SIGN ON BONUS of up to $7500 to High Qualified candidates.  Highly qualified is defined as having obtained a NC DPI Certified Teaching License in the appropriate content area and have the Deaf/Hard of Hearing endorsement.

All certified educators working at Eastern NC School for the Deaf are required to be paid from the NC Dept of Public Instruction's Salary Schedule. This schedule is approved annually by the NC General Assembly and sets a minimum pay based on the educator's years of experience and education level.  In addition to base salary, the ENCSD also pays an additional reoccurring monthly supplement of 8% of base salary.

Applicants seeking National Guard preference must attach an NGB 23A (RPAS) if they are a current member of the NC National Guard.  If an applicant is a former NC National Guard Member who served for at least 6 years and was discharged under honorable conditions, they must attach either a DD256 or NGB 22 along with their State application.

Applicants with degrees not conferred at a United States college or university must attach a degree verification that their degree is equivalent to a similar degree form a US institution.

Individuals who have earned at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 may be offered employment to teach if certain additional criteria are met.  These prospects must gain employment AND affiliate with an Educator Preparation Program (EPP) before the Eastern NC School for the Deaf can apply for the new teacher's Residency License.
