Job Description

This position will be supporting the Affective Needs Program.

PURPOSE STATEMENT: The School Social Worker is responsible for providing comprehensive social work services to students, families, school staff, the school district, and the community. This includes engagement, assessment, intervention, evaluation, and advocacy with the goal of helping students improve their academic achievement and social, emotional, and behavioral competence.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty/functions satisfactorily.   • Collaborate with students' educational team for the purpose of interpreting assessment data related to the identification of possible educational disabilities.

  • Conduct formal and/or informal social, emotional, and behavioral assessments for special education evaluations, and incorporate assessment data in developing and implementing individualized programs and interventions for the purpose of enhancing students' abilities to benefit from educational experiences.

  • Participate in the development of student IEP measurable goals and objectives for the purpose of ensuring student access to the district curriculum and instruction on state standards and benchmarks.

  • Using a multi-tiered approach, provide culturally responsive and evidence-informed social, emotional, and/or behavioral interventions (e.g. counseling; conflict resolution; problem solving; peer relationships; stress management; bullying/violence prevention; anger management; restorative conferencing; crisis assessment, intervention and prevention; etc.) with the goal of enhancing student social, emotional, behavioral, and academic outcomes.

  • Collect, analyze, synthesize, and disseminate data related to social work practice as well as conduct ongoing evaluation/monitoring to determine the level of effectiveness of interventions and adjust interventions as needed.

  • Consult with staff regarding behavioral management techniques and strategies, functional behavioral assessments, affective development as well as social, emotional, behavioral, and/or cultural factors that impact student performance.

  • Facilitate restorative conversations among students, school staff, and/or families for the purpose of resolving issues affecting school and promoting advocacy for students as appropriate.

  • Provide staff and families professional development to better understand factors (cultural, societal, economic, familial, health, legislation, etc.) affecting a student's performance and behavior.

  • Coordinate services with a variety of outside agencies, school services, etc. (e.g. mental health, child welfare, medical, etc.) for the purpose of providing resource information for students and/or families.

  • Engage with students, staff, families, school district, and community within the context of multicultural awareness for the purpose of enhancing connections between people and their environments, with a focus on enhancing school climate and culture.

  • Maintain timely, accurate, and confidential records that document school social work services, demonstrate outcomes, and promote accountability to the local education agency and community. Records shall be maintained according to federal, state, and local laws.

  • Engage in meetings, workshops, seminars, and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information regarding evidence-informed practice and best practice for social work.

  • Understand and comply with local, state, and federal mandates related to informed consent, privacy and confidentiality, and access to records within the context of legal and ethical rights of minors and parents.

  • Take a critical approach to understanding current and historical public education policies in order to better advocate for, develop, and implement educational programs and/or policies with regard to cultural humility and social and economic justice.

  • Adhere to NASW Code of Ethics, NASW Standards for School Social Work Practice, & School Social Work Association of America Practice Model.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

  • Conduct formal and informal assessments of individuals, families and systems/organizations (classroom, school, neighborhood, district, state) and utilize data with the goal of advancing equitable educational opportunities.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Completion of a supervised practicum and internship in a school setting as part of the social work master's program preferred.

  • Master's degree in social work from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS:

Wyoming Educator License with a Professional Services Endorsement for School Social Worker and licensed or provisionally licensed by the Wyoming Mental Health Licensing Board.

CONTINUING EDUCATION:

After obtaining licensure and certification, school social workers are required to participate in continuing education to maintain their credentials. This can involve attending workshops, seminars, or completing additional coursework.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES:

Skills: Ability to perform technical tasks, update skills to meet changing job demands, use appropriate assessment instruments, maintain accurate records, manage projects, and utilize relevant software applications. Maintain integrity of confidential information relating to students, staff, or district patrons in accordance with district policy and administrative guidelines; state and federal laws.

Communication: Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to speak effectively to large and small groups. Excellent human relations skills with the ability to establish good relationships with diverse individuals and groups.

Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics and the School Social Work Association of America National Model. Understanding of child development stages, laws/regulations/policies, community resources, curriculum and instructional methods, and treatment modalities and assessments.

Abilities: Capability to schedule appropriate activities, collaborate with diverse groups, work with data, use job-related equipment, solve problems independently, communicate effectively, maintain confidentiality, meet deadlines, prioritize tasks, work in a team, and handle interruptions efficiently.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING KNOWLEDGE:

  • Operating knowledge of and experience with typical office equipment, such as telephones, copier, etc.

  • Operating knowledge of and experience with office productivity programs, such as Microsoft Office Suite, E-mail, etc.
