Job Summary:

The Social Worker is an integral link between school, home, and community in helping students achieve academic success. The Social Worker is responsible for providing consultation, wellness services, ongoing case management, and a full range of social emotional prevention, intervention, counseling and agency linkage to resources within the chartering school district. The School Social worker will interact with students and build relationships with parents educating them on school policies regarding attendance and students' intervention needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assess home, school, personal, and community factors that may affect a student's learning and overall well-being

  • Provide individual, group, and family treatment targeting students identified on the school's Early Warning System and who are at risk of school failure due to attendance, social, behavioral, and emotional problems utilizing evidence based and/or evidence informed practices

  • Assist in providing individual and/or group counseling and early intervention services for students having difficulties with academic progress including but not limited to attendance challenges, mental health, trauma awareness, social skills, grief, anger management, conflict resolution, peer mediation, motivation, and other social emotional issues that impact learning.

  • Assist with the overall implementation of school-based mental health and wellness services

  • Consult with district, school administrators, teachers, support providers, and parents regarding effective strategies, interventions, and available resources for dealing with problems related to attendance, social, emotional, and students' academic needs

  • Makes referrals to school and community resources to provide both remedial and preventive services to students and their families.

  • Extend effort to ensure that students attend school regularly and report to class promptly

  • Develops a plan to enhance student learning and participation in school. This may include: monitoring students with poor attendance--intervening and referring as necessary; functional behavioral assessment; academic improvement planning; behavior support planning; and individual education planning.

  • Work cooperatively with the chartering district, teachers, counselors, school administrators, and parents to ensure compliance with attendance laws and regulations of the school and other related duties as required

  • Meet with parents on a regular basis and attend truancy hearings when applicable

  • Gather and review attendance data to identify students who are excessively truant

  • Assist with implementing truancy prevention programs and recommends strategies to support and improve regular school attendance

  • Makes referrals to school and community resources to provide both remedial and preventive services to students and their families.

  • Assist in conducting risk and threat assessments, respond to crisis situations and assist with the assessment of students expressing suicidal and homicidal ideation.

  • Actively participate in the various school-based team meetings such as Instructional, Data, Student Attendance, Enrollment and Retention, Security and Threat Assessment, Crisis Management, Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS), Response to Intervention (RtI), 504, and Individual Education Plan (IEP) Teams as appropriate.

  • Assist in the implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) and Restorative Practices.

  • Participate as an active member of site and district crisis teams

  • Refer out to mental health and community agencies and follow up with referrals

  • Utilize district data management systems for documentation of referrals, delivery and evaluation/measurement and progress monitoring of social work services

  • Maintains awareness of developments in the field of school social work by participation in workshops and seminars as identified

  • Attends and successfully completes all staff development training as required by state law or directed by the Health Department.

  • Administers various behavior rating scales and other standardized instruments.

  • Assist faculty, students, parents, and the community on issues such as child abuse, suicide, safety, alcohol/drug abuse, human relationships, communication skills, peer mediation, cooperative discipline, homelessness, truancy, teen pregnancy, character education, and other mental health/social issues.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree required in Social Science, Psychology, Social Work, Public administration

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook;

  • Must be able to work flexible hours to meet the needs of students

  • One (1) year of experience in social work or one (1) year of experience working in a school for a community agency or graduate internship at a school in social work

Preferred

  • Master's degree in Social Work

  • Bilingual

  • Evidence of working knowledge and comfort level with instructional technology;

  • Experience working with at-risk student population;
