Job Title: School Social Work & Processes Guide

Reports to: Superintendent

Location: Newhalen/Iliamna, AK (LPSD's largest school community)

Job Summary:

This position will be a member of the School Counseling and Student Support Services team, providing professional skills in social work to assist students, their families, and faculty, support primary prevention and secondary intervention programs designed to enhance students' self-esteem, social-emotional adjustment, interpersonal skills development and their ability to succeed within the instructional program, provide linkage, coordination, and case management services for students and families with collaborative agency and community resource networks. Strong interpersonal skills and knowledge of LPSD communities are imperative.

Provides school social work services to students at risk for school failure and demonstrates the ability to receive social/emotional support for additional or behavioral concerns within the school setting.

Education/Knowledge Requirement:

Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW) preferred

Major field of study or degree emphasis: Social Work

License Requirement:

Hold a License of Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or License of Master Social Worker (LMSW) in the State of Alaska (or working towards this licensure)

Type C Certification

  • State of Alaska Department of Education and Early (or working towards this licensure)

Experience Requirement

A minimum of two years of experience in social work or mental health counseling is preferred.

Experience in children's mental health is preferred

Experience living and serving remote Alaska communities preferred

Experience in grant management is preferred

  • Assists teachers and parents in developing and implementing behavior management plans to remediate problem behaviors.

  • Assists students to improve their academic and social/emotional well-being.

  • Provides support to students in social skills, anger management, and stress reduction to students who are experiencing social/emotional/behavioral problems that interfere with their learning or the ability of others to learn.

  • Provides short-term individual and group counseling to students experiencing social/emotional/behavioral problems.

  • Provides information to families and assists them in accessing long-term or intensive counseling services, as needed.

  • Participates in multidisciplinary team planning

  • Provides expertise to school staff regarding the social and emotional needs of students

  • Acts as a liaison between the home, school, and community providers to access, mobilize, and coordinate services.

  • Communicate with staff, administration, and parents concerning students' social, emotional, and behavioral progress.

  • Enlists the support of parents and families to promote students' success.

  • Builds home/school partnerships by supporting parents and family members through school conferences and home visits.

  • Interprets school policies for families.

  • Provides information to students and parents about community services and makes referrals to community providers, as appropriate.

  • Consults and collaborates with social services, mental health, and other community providers.

  • Maintains an accurate record of students, parents, and other contacts in conjunction with PowerSchool (LPSD's current student information system)

  • Provides crisis intervention services as needed.

  • Conducts risk assessments.

  • Coordinates home, school, and community resources to address the crisis.

  • Coordinates follow-up services as needed

  • Performs other professional work within the scope of this position that furthers the district's mission, goals, and initiatives.

  • Attend training sessions, conferences, seminars, department and district meetings, and IEP and MTSS meetings.

  • Serves on District committees, task forces, work groups, etc., as requested.

  • Keeps abreast of changing developments, trends, and instructional and educational technologies.

  • Collect data and information for grant reporting and assist in meeting grant obligations

  • Essential knowledge and specialized subject knowledge required to perform the essential

functions of the job:

  • Working knowledge of School Social Work's principles, practices, and ethical standards; the relevant state and federal laws, rules, and regulations; and applicable district policies.

  • Current knowledge of the community resources and support systems available to assist students and their families.

  • Ability to deal effectively and appropriately with students, parents, and other educational professionals regarding student concerns and problems.

  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to consult with school personnel in developing and implementing effective student social and behavioral interventions.

  • Ability to travel between and among school sites throughout the District and to students' homes, as necessary.

  • Ability to be flexible and prioritize activities.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general educational periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, State and

  • Project Management involves developing and coordinating projects, communicating project plans, progress, and changes, completing projects on time, and managing project activities and teams.

  • Planning/Organizing: Prioritizes and plans work activities. Uses time efficiently. Plans for additional resources. Sets goals and objectives. Organizes or schedules other people and their tasks. Develop realistic action plans.

  • Professionalism: Tactfully approaches others. Reacts well under pressure and treats others with respect and consideration regardless of their status or position. Accepts responsibility for own actions.

  • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk, or hear. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, such as reading handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands and interact with the public and other staff.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Compensation:

1.172 - day exempt contract in accordance with LPSD's Teacher Agreement

  • Schedule to be mutually agreed upon during 2024-2025 school year

2.Salary placement on the appropriate scale depends on educational background and experience.
