Unity Preparatory Charter High School is seeking a full time School Safety Associate The successful candidate will report directly to the Assistant Principal of Operations & Safety and must have the capacity to maintain safety campus wide & school culture in common spaces through actively building appropriate relationships with students, parents & staff within their specific role. To do this the successful candidate will proactively enforce school rules, procedures, protocols and support school culture using the PBIS model at the direction of the Assistant Principal of Operations & Safety. The successful candidate must also be able to work cooperatively with the entire school team in a professional manner and must have the appropriate demeanor to work with children and adolescents, some with special needs.

Essential Functions

Please note that the following duties are representative for the School Safety Associate. The omission of specific duties doesn't exclude them from being duties of this position. Other duties may be required and assigned at the direction of the Principal and/or the Assistant Principal for Operations & Safety.

  • Actively supervise hallways, stairwells, bathrooms and locker rooms during instructional periods and conduct sweeps of those spaces as needed to ensure that all common areas are orderly and schoolwide expectations are being adhered to.

  • Supervise and maintain optimal safety during morning entry, transitions, lunch periods and dismissal in conjunction with school administration.

  • Facilitates and conducts safety scanning of students during morning arrivals when applicable and conducts leadership-requested searches of student belongings in accordance with school policy.

  • Serves as a key instrumental point of contact during moments of alarm or emergencies also known as general response protocols.

  • Aids sick or injured students, visitors or staff. Call for medical, police or fire assistance as needed when directed.

  • Notifies the Dean of Students or designee of all incidents and completes any related documentation (Incident log, jupiter log, witness statement, etc.)

  • Responds to altercations between students or other persons in attempts to separate and deescalate the involved persons.

  • Participates and attends required meetings ( staff meetings, department meetings, discipline review board hearings, suspension meetings, disciplinary team meetings, building response team meetings, safety committee meetings, etc.)

  • Monitors and properly uses radios to respond to or request assistance from school personnel, monitors security camera systems, upload and review footage as necessary.

  • Retrieves and escorts students to the Dean's Office or Main Office as needed.

  • Maintains campus access control and visitor procedures via main desk operations.

  • Any other school safety and/or school culture related tasks as determined by the Principal and/or Assistant Principal for Operations & Safety.

Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required. 2 year college degree preferred.

  • Previous security and/or safety related role within an educational institution or community based program preferred.

  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds, climb stairs quickly, appropriately restrain persons and maintain a sense of urgency in relation to safety while also remaining calm in moments of crisis or concern.

  • Ability to be flexible and work shifts outside of normal school hours when required. May be required to stand and/or work in conditions of inclement weather within the role.

  • Maintain any and all necessary training certifications and attend professional development sessions as determined by the Assistant Principal for Operations & Safety.

  • D10 - Fire & Emergency Drill Conductor for NYC K-12 Schools

  • S95 - Supervision for Fire Alarm Systems

  • F01 - Citywide Fire Guard for Impairment

  • F85 - Fire Safety Director with Active Shooter and Medical Emergency Preparedness

  • CPR/Advanced First Aid: Responding to Emergencies

  • 8 Hour and 16 Hour security certification

  • NYS Security license

  • Crisis Prevention Institute - Nonviolent Crisis Intervention

  • De-escalation & Restraint

  • Successfully pass a criminal background check as required by State law.
