The School Resource Officer (SRO) at Lawrence County Independent Schools (LCIS) is a dedicated law enforcement officer tasked with ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors within the school environment. The SRO serves as a liaison between the school community and the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department, promoting positive relationships and fostering a secure educational environment.
Must have current or previous ILEA or Police Academy Certification and police experience.
Educational Programs and Community Engagement:
Develop and implement educational programs to enhance students' understanding and respect for the law and law enforcement.
Attend and participate in extracurricular activities to build positive relationships between students and law enforcement officials.
Policy and Disciplinary Infractions:
Understand and enforce school policies regarding disciplinary infractions versus criminal activities requiring law enforcement involvement.
Provide guidance and training to school staff on crisis management, school security, and enforcement techniques.
Law Enforcement and Crisis Response:
Respond swiftly and effectively to disruptions and criminal offenses on school grounds, including incidents involving weapons, substance abuse, vandalism, and other criminal activities.
Conduct investigations and make reports as per department regulations for criminal offenses occurring at LCIS.
Student Support and Safety Initiatives:
Address student issues such as alcohol and drug use, gang involvement, bullying, and mental health concerns through proactive intervention and support services.
Collaborate with district officials, probation departments, and health agencies to promote safe and drug-free schools and youth development.
Training and Program Development:
Provide training and in-service sessions to staff on safety protocols, crisis response, and school security measures.
Assist in developing and implementing a Safe School Plan and crisis preparedness guidelines for LCIS.
Community Liaison and Intelligence Sharing:
Serve as a liaison between the school, law enforcement, probation, and community stakeholders to share information and address potential risks or concerns.
Provide intelligence on gang or drug activities within the school environment to enhance safety and security measures.
Professional Development and Compliance:
Attend recommended SRO training and certifications to enhance professional skills and stay updated on relevant laws and procedures.
Maintain conduct that reflects positively on the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department and serves as a role model for students and the community.
Preventative Strategies and Outreach:
Conduct classes and presentations on topics such as drug prevention, underage drinking, bullying, cyberbullying, and student rights and responsibilities.
Implement preventative tactics and techniques based on a thorough knowledge of LCIS and outdoor areas to promote a safe learning environment.
