Reporting to the School Principal, the School Psychologist will serve as a core member of the academic team in fulfilling and monitoring the school's vision, mission, core values, and goals and should be competent at implementing and maintaining a framework for targeted support for struggling student offenders of all ages in effective ways to create a flexible program and environment favorable to learning and personal growth in accordance with the ability of each student offender housed in a medium/close custody male correctional facility as well as completing or performing any additional duties as assigned by the principal.

The purpose of this position is to implement and maintain a framework of support for students struggling in academic, behavioral, and social emotional skill areas through individual, small group, and whole class intervention and instruction. The intent of this position is to provide student support services to offenders aged 18 to 22 for the purpose of attaining a high school equivalency diploma.

Job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Implement the National Association of School Psychologists' Model for Comprehensive and Integrated School Psychological Services and the NC Professional School Psychology Standards

  • Administer a variety of formal and informal student assessment measures to assess all areas of suspected disabilities

  • Reflect on practice and engage in continuous improvement

  • Use effective oral and written communication skills

  • Use technology-based productivity applications and software programs including, but not limited to, applications within the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)

  • Collaborate with fellow educators and other school personnel regarding struggling students

Compensation for all certified educators working for NCDAC in school psychologist educator positions is based on the NC Dept of Public Instruction's Salary Schedule. This schedule is approved annually by the NC General Assembly and sets pay based on the educator's years of experience and education level.

About GCI:

Granville Correctional Institution is located in Butner, NC (Granville County). Opened in 1997, Granville Correctional Institution houses close and medium custody male offenders, primarily between 18 and 25 years of age, in both single cells and dormitories.  Offenders housed at GCI are assigned to various restrictive housing and control statuses, and the facility offers a wide variety of programs, including educational and vocational programs, as well as a variety of job assignments; Granville Correctional is home to one of the prison system's four schools for younger offenders. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities listed below, along with the Minimum Education and Experience requirements, are REQUIRED to qualify for this position. To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

  • Documented experience in working with and implementing frameworks for targeted support for struggling students (such as Multi-Tiered System of Support
  • MTSS) which include service delivery including universal screening, progress monitoring, problem-solving processes, and delivery of interventions through the use of effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Documented experience utilizing of state and federal policies and regulations related to special education and Section 504 (IDEA, ADA)

  • Documented experience implementing instructional best practices regarding curriculum and instruction and developmental stages in school environments

  • Documented experience in using ECATS, Power School, and other pertinent student information systems

  • Documented experience in assisting and supporting development and/or revision of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students with disabilities and in the management of these plans in ECATS or other information management systems associated with Exceptional Student Populations

Management Preferences:

  • Experience incorporating comprehensive and integrated school psychological services

  • Experience providing crisis and suicide prevention and intervention

  • Demonstrated skills to design and deliver professional development

  • Nationally Certified School Psychologist Credential

  • Experience in a variety of educational practices for at-risk students

  • Experience in aggregating, disaggregating, and interpreting standardized tests, formative and summative assessment results, and student data accurately and effectively

  • Experience in communicating effectively with all pertinent stakeholders, in both oral and written formats

  • Experience in maintaining accurate records including, but not limited to, social and emotional skills, summative and formative performance, assessment results, and anecdotal notes

  • Experience in the utilization of Power School, ECATS, and other digital information management systems associated with activities pertinent to Exceptional Student Population/ Exceptional Children

The successful applicant must possess a Sixth-Year Advanced degree or above in School Psychology, with or eligible to receive a license at of one of the following levels: S or D.

The successful applicant must possess a current (non-expired) State of North Carolina Professional Educator's License (Class Code S or D) with certification in the area of School Psychology or be eligible to obtain an Emergency or Residency teaching license or Provisional licensure in the aforementioned certification area(s). Eligibility requirements for the Emergency and Residency Licenses are:

Emergency One-Year License Eligibility: the candidate must 

(1) hold a bachelor's degree with 18 hours of coursework relevant to the requested licensure area (but has not completed a recognized educator preparation program) and 

(2) does not qualify for a Residency License

Residency License Eligibility: the candidate must 

(1) hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university; 

(2) have completed 24 hours of coursework relevant to the requested area of licensure OR passed the content area examination relevant to the requested licensure area that has been approved by the State Board of Education; 

(3) be enrolled in a recognized Educator Preparation Program (EPP).

Provisional License Eligibility:   the candidate must

(1) hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university; 

(2) hold a non-expired Continuing Professional License (CPL), and have completed at least three years of teaching experience (either in North Carolina or verified experience from another state) and

(3) be working toward passing the content area examination approved by the State Board of Education relevant to the requested provisional licensure area.

This position is governed under Chapter 115c, Elementary and Secondary Education, and Chapter 126 of the NC State Human Resources Act.
