The UAB Heersink School of Medicine, Department of Surgery is currently recruiting faculty candidates to be considered for a tenure track or non-tenure track faculty appointment in the Division of Cardiothoracic/ Vascular Surgery. The successful candidate will be expected to meet clinical, research and teaching needs in the Department of Surgery.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications and nominations for the position of Surgical Director, Heart Transplant Program to join its nationally ranked thoracic transplant team.

The individuals chosen for this position will work collaboratively with the heart transplant program medical directors and leaders within the Comprehensive Transplant Institute and Cardiovascular Institute to oversee all aspects of program performance. The Surgical Director, Heart Transplant Program will hold a faculty appointment in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and report clinically and administratively to the Director of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Co-Director of the Cardiovascular Institute.

The primary focus of each of the Surgical Directors will be to build upon successful existing programs and:

  • Engage with, lead, and energize a clinical and scientific community of cardiothoracic providers;

  • Recruit the finest clinical, administrative and research talent;

  • Coordinate with UAB Health System and UAB Medicine physician practices to continue to grow and build a world-class, integrated academic system of cardiac and cardiovascular care;

  • Coordinate all necessary support and resources for faculty and trainees, excel in developing outstanding mentorship programs, foster faculty engagement with strategic research initiatives, and advance innovation in research, education, and outreach;

  • Work closely with Marketing and Communications and Development teams on outreach strategies and content development for key demographics and donors; and

  • Contribute to the continued growth of one of the nation's leaders in high-quality heart and lung care.

The successful candidates will be responsible for clinical, academic, and administrative activities of the respective transplant programs and therefore they must have a deep knowledge of clinical practice; a strong commitment to training and career development in clinical research and clinical care; and demonstrated leadership and administrative ability in a complex clinical enterprise.

The Surgical Directors must bring vision to the task of drafting the program's future, coupled with an ability to communicate in a fashion that inspires others to follow. These two leaders will be consensus builders, while also capable of serving as agents for change. The incoming Directors will be responsible for partnering across the Comprehensive Transplant Institute and Cardiovascular Institute to promote a collegial work environment that enhances clinical growth and academic development while advancing Position Specification 8 research activities consistent with the growth of clinical and investigative programs that increase the profile of these programs locally and nationally.

They will demonstrate the leadership which fosters a collective and collaborative culture within the heart and lung transplant programs and beyond, bringing together the multidisciplinary people and programs with a shared vision and purpose, and thereby enhancing faculty engagement and development. The Surgical Directors will also work collaboratively across UAB Medicine to ensure that the program is a leader in the rapidly evolving, multidisciplinary approaches to end stage organ disease.

The Surgical Directors must demonstrate a passion for mentoring and development of faculty and fellows, including interpersonal skills that will assure successful relationship building with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. These individuals will be charged with fostering an environment of integrity, trust, and transparency, recognizing the importance of physician and staff well-being, and promoting institutional stewardship and the organizational values and academic purposes of UAB Medicine.

Required Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will hold an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. and will be an outstanding leader and highly skilled, widely recognized in the field with a strong track record. Candidate should have substantial professional work experience in one or more areas of research, teaching and/or service.
