Caswell County Schools Job Description: Director of Child Nutrition

JOB TITLE: Director of School Nutrition

REPORTS TO: Superintendent

SALARY: Based on State and Local Salary Schedule

STATUS: Certified, 12 Months

SUMMARY: Director of School Nutrition was established to plan, direct, administer and evaluate all aspects of the Food and Nutrition Program in order to meet educational and nutritional needs of children.The Director of School Nutrition will assure program compliance with relevant federal, state and local policies, regulations and procedures. The Director will partner with others in the District and community to develop a nutrition program which meets customer satisfaction, community values and District administrative expectations.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Direct and manage district's school nutrition programs

  • Develop menus that meet established nutritional requirements for students

  • Establish and direct process of providing free and reduced lunch applications following United States Department of Agriculture guidelines for meal eligibility and reimbursement of federal funds

  • Develop and maintain written procedures for all food service operations

  • Develop and administer budget based on documented needs and ensure that operations are cost effective and funds are managed prudently

  • Work cooperatively to develop and implement a cost effective and efficient food procurement and inventory system that meets both federal and state standards

  • Assist with the evaluation of formal bids and make recommendations for the awarding of contracts for school board approval

  • Approve and forward invoices and purchase orders for food service department to accounting department

  • Develop and implement inventory and stock control program for equipment and supplies and recommend replacement an disposal of obsolete equipment as necessary

  • Implement federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy

  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records and other documents required

  • Ensure that employee time records are accurately maintained and data necessary to process food service payroll is delivered in a timely manner

  • Complete minimum annual continuing education requirements

  • Select, train, supervise, and evaluate staff and make recommendations to relative to assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal

  • Prepare, review and revise job descriptions for food service department positions

  • Develop training options and improvement plans to ensure exemplary operation in the food service area

  • Ensure that measures are in place and operating to protect food, supplies, and equipment in school cafeterias, lunchrooms, and warehouses

  • Maintain safety standards that confirm with federal, state and insurance regulations and develop a program of preventive safety

  • Organize and conduct training programs to promote safe food handling and a safe work environment

  • Develop guidelines for providing services in response to disaster or emergency situations

  • Supervise, evaluate, and recommend the hiring and firing of campus cafeteria managers, supervisors and support staff assigned to the School Nutrition department

MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent educational experience with academic major in Food and Nutrition, Dietetics, Home and Consumer Sciences, Food Service Management, Nutrition Education, Culinary Arts, Business or a related field

  • Eight hours of Food Safety (completed not more than five years prior to employee's start date or within 30 days of employee's start date)

  • Clear and valid NC driver's license

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge on menu planning, food purchasing, and preparation of foods in food service environment

  • Ability to conduct on-site inspections of food service facilities district wide

  • Ability to manage budget and personnel

  • Ability to implement policy and procedures

  • Ability to interpret data

  • Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Knowledge of US Federal and USDA regulations relating to public school food service

  • Ability to develop and provide training programs for school nutrition personnel

  • Performs and direct job related proficiency with the highest ethical integrity

  • Performs and directs with a commitment to promote a quality CNP that meets the nutritional needs of the customer served

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk and listen. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to fingers, handle, or feel: reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds or more at times.
