TITLE: School Nursing Assistants

REPORTS TO: School Nurse

SUPERVISES: N/A

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: As determined by NLPS posting for hourly services

PRIMARY FUNCTION: To support the school nurse in providing health care in the school setting and provide clerical and emergency assistance within New London Public Schools under the supervision of the school nurse and/or the supervisor of school nursing.

RELATIONSHIP WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION:

The School Health Aide is to act as a member of New London Public Schools and participates in the direct implementation of nursing care plans and therapeutic/educational programs. The responsibility of the School Health Aide is generally supportive in nature.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This description of School Health Aide is for identification and administrative purposes only. It is not intended to be a complete statement of all duties, which may be assigned or adjusted by the Superintendent of Schools according to varying needs.

• Assist The Registered Nurse with the assessment of children and perform routine medical care.

• Assist The Registered Nurse with the maintenance of student records.

• Provide emergency treatment when necessary and follow established emergency medical procedures under the direction of the school's Registered Nurse.

• Lift and/or restrain students as necessary according to safety care protocols.

• Assist in the cleaning and maintenance of all medical equipment.

• Maintain SNAP medical record information.

• Perform other duties as requested.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School Diploma or equivalent

• Able to read, write, carry out directions, and keep simple records

• Active CPR and First Aid certification

• Ability to accurately take and record temperature, and function under minimal supervision

• Ability to effectively communicate with students, school personnel and parents

• Knowledge of computer software including Word, Excel and Outlook

• Special Skills:

• Medium to heavy work load

• Standing, walking, and handling are performed on a constant basis

• Sitting, carrying, bending lifting/lowering, pushing/pulling with whole body and with exertion up to 50 pounds

• Adequate vision and hearing to carry out assigned duties

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bilingual (English and Spanish)

• Experience working with children

• Experience as a health aide

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION: Annually by the School Nurse

SALARY: Hourly rate of $21.00-$24.00, as determined by educational background and/or experiences. The workday is 7.0 hours with 6.5 hours of paid work time an .5 hour of unpaid lunch. Eligibility for paid sick time will be effective July 1st, 2024.
