Position: School Nurse To Whom Responsible: Health Services Coordinator and Building Principal For Whom/What Responsible: To maintain the smooth and efficient operation of the school health services program in order to realize that service's maximum positive impact on the educational environment. Qualifications: Degree: Registered Professional Nurse (R.N.)
OR
Licensed Practical Nurse (L.P.N.) under the direct supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse.
License: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, licensed to practice in the state of Missouri. A copy of the current license must be on file in the office of the superintendent. Preferred Experience: Prior work in public school, public health, or related fields, computer use and excellent human relation skills. Primary Responsibilities To assist in maintaining school health services, and to assist in the implementation of the district's preventive health care program.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
PROGRAM SERVICES
Applies appropriate theory as basis for decision-making in nursing practice in the school setting for nurse management of:
Common acute and chronic physical conditions of childhood and adolescence
Child and adolescent injuries
Child abuse and neglect
Adolescent pregnancy
Childhood and adolescent substance abuse
Poverty and racism and their effects on the child development and child health
Environmental health issues.
Implements district policies for caring for students who become ill or injured at school. Contacts district nurse when appropriate and notify her of all significant incidents. Is accountable to the district nurse for nursing assessment and care given.
Renders first aid and/or the appropriate nursing care to student and staff in case of accident or illness according to the guidelines set forth by the District Health Services Manual. When further attention is required, the student will be released to the care of the parent, a designated responsible person, and/or other medical/hospital personnel.
Collects information about the health and developmental status of the student in a systematic and continuous manner in order to make a nursing assessment and establish priority for action.
Collaborates with the District School Nurse in establishing a nursing diagnosis and developing an I.H.P. (Individual Healthcare Plan), with specific goals and nursing interventions, on each student with a specific health need.
Intervenes as guided by the nursing care plan to implement nursing actions that promote, maintain, or restore health, prevent illness and effect rehabilitation.
Assesses student responses to nursing care plan to implement nursing actions that promote, maintain, or restore health, prevent illness and effect rehabilitation.
Assists students and staff with health maintenance needs. When appropriate, notifies the parent of designated responsible person regarding the health status of the student. Promotes wellness and self care.
Arranges and assists with the presentation of faculty and/or administrator training sessions regarding health topics affecting the lives of students.
Assists in developing the Individual Educational Program (I.E.P.) for students when indicated by their health and/or developmental status. Interprets any medical findings to the student, the parent, and appropriate school personnel. Recommendations for modification of the educational program will be made in consultation with the districts nurse and will be communicated to all appropriate school personnel.
Acts as liaison between administrators, faculty, parents, and community agencies to meet increasing health care needs.
Coordinates the planning for the physical needs of handicapped students.
Makes referrals and follow-ups on individual health concerns by telephone, written reports, or personal conference with parents and/or medical personnel.
Assists in identifying and reporting suspected child abuse/neglect.
Communicates all pertinent or new health information, accidents, incidents, and/or communicable diseases to the district nurse. Communicates with appropriate school personnel regarding health concerns of students. Sends an updated confidential health list to the district nurse with each change or addition.
Maintains strict confidentiality, communicating health issues only to the district nurse and to those personnel who have a need to know. Obtains written authorization for release of information to outside agency.
Assists with the district program for communicable disease control prescribed by the State Department of Health and the school district:
Communicates with faculty, staff and students regarding universal precautions.
Follows procedures for excluding students with communicable diseases
Arranges for isolation of ill students who are to be excluded
Reports all trends or outbreaks to the district nurse
Administers medication and/or treatments in accordance with district policy.
Interprets immunization laws to parents and school personnel. Maintains a computer base of immunization records for all students to assure compliance with all state regulations. Assesses each student's status and notifies parents of any deficiencies. (Immunization records can be shared legally in MO).
Plans, conducts, and/or facilitates building and/or district screening program, in cooperation with the district nurse, to identify health deficits of students. Observes for deviations from normal growth and counsels with parents and students when appropriate for referral and follow-up activities. Performs rescreenings and makes referrals based on criteria in the District Health Services Manual. Documents all screening information in the permanent health record and computer data base.
Maintains and/or supervises the accurate documentation of information, records and reports and the maintenance of student health records (which are protected by MO law), separately from the student's academic record and stores the record in a locked file. Provides for appropriate accessibility and utilization of confidential information related to student health.
Works closely with principals, teachers, social workers, district nurse, and/or counselors so that they are aware of students with frequent or prolonged absences and/or current health concerns.
Supervises the maintenance of assigned school health facility, supplies and equipment. Maintains a stock of all medical supplies and informs the district nurse of any needed supplies or equipment.
Serves as a consultant and resource person for the health education needs of the building. Consults with the district nurse for appropriate medical information. Obtains approval of all hand-outs from the district nurse before distribution to students or staff.
Coordinates any health room assistants or volunteers and assists with training of substitute health aides.
Is alert to the school environment for safety hazards and sanitary conditions. Reports any concerns or trends to the building principal and/or district nurse, as appropriate.
Uses direct health services as a vehicle for individual health education and counseling with students.
Assists teachers and/or the district nurse in presenting health instruction in the classroom.
Serves on school student assistance teams. Conducts group meetings for students, staff or parents regarding particular health issues.
Promotes the application of health principles within the arena of school services (food service, custodial, etc).
Participates in the development, implementation and revision of policies, procedures and standards for the school health program. Evaluates nursing assessment, health screenings, and care given in accordance with state and district guidelines. Provides input into district health programs and evaluations.
Other related and appropriate duties as assigned by the district health services coordinator or the building principal.
Interpersonal Relationships
Establishes a supportive and ongoing relationship with students with special health care needs. Services as health resource to all students and their families and advocates for their need to learn in a safe and accessible environment.
Collaborates effectively with faculty, administration, community organizations and other health care personnel to meet the increasing health issues in the lives of students with affect classroom performance.
Informs faculty and administrator of key health issues in the lives of students with affect classroom performance.
Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with students, staff, administrators, parents, and the community.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
The School Health Nurse is employed for 190 days during the school term according to the annual school calendar for certificated teachers. Salary shall be established annually by the Board of Education and benefits are as provided for full-time employees. Work-related expenses validated by a monthly log shall be reimbursed at district rates.
EVALUATION
Performance of this position will be evaluated by the district health services coordinator in consultation with the building administrator according to board policies and adopted procedures for support staff members.
