ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Oversee the school's infirmary by dispensing and recording approved medications, maintaining current medication supplies and replacing expired medications, appropriate record keeping, and coordinating the purchase of supplies.

  • Oversee and manage health related aspects of pandemic and emergency response.

  • Create care plans for students with medical diagnoses that require accommodations during the school day, and meet annually or on an as needed basis with parents, teachers, specialists, and administration to review care plans

  • Plan school health program, in cooperation with medical authorities and school administration.

  • Develop policy and procedural manuals to guide the delivery of health services as well as safeguard students and school personnel, adapting policies and protocols to the needs of the school, conditions of the students, and new medical technology.

  • Utilize evidence-based nursing practice.

  • Participate in nursing assessments, and make recommendations for follow-up with outside medical or other providers as needed.

  • Coordinate training and education of faculty and staff in first aid, CPR, and blood borne pathogens, and establish nursing policies in response to emergency situations.

  • Cooperate with school personnel in identifying and meeting social, emotional, and physical needs of school children.

  • Maintain and keep current TB, CPR, and First Aid training records, and manage notification of renewals.

  • Collect annual employee emergency health information.

  • Partner with the Emergency Preparedness Team to ensure that medical supplies are readily available and procedures are in place.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current school nursing best practices and state regulations related to school health services and immunizations.

  • Maintain active membership in state and national professional school nursing organizations

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty to the satisfaction of the administration. EDUCATION: Must possess a current Registered Nursing or Licensed Vocational Nurse License in the state of California. Must possess a current CPR/First Aid Certification.

BEHAVIORAL SKILLS: Demonstrates personal integrity, friendliness, patience, fairness, openness, non-defensiveness, sensitivity, flexibility, and enthusiasm.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret written documents pertinent to computer technology. Ability to write reports, copy for newsletters, keep records, and communicate with parents and students. Ability to verbally present information clearly and respond to questions from children, parents, colleagues, administrators and visitors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide; create and interpret graphs, compute ratio and percent and use a calculator.

TECHNICAL SKILLS: Ability to use computer technology to word process, create newsletters, graphs, spreadsheets, write reports, compose letters, send E-Mail, access the Internet. Ability to train colleagues and faculty on use of the computer. Ability to use and maintain functioning of simple tools and machines, such as copiers, laminators, and telephones.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and apply common sense in dealing with everyday and emergency situations. Ability to listen and respond to technical problems presented by colleagues. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram and schedule form.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is required to stand, walk, sit, climb, use hands, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
