TITLE: School Nurse - Substitute (Per Diem)
TYPE: School Nurse
SALARY: Per School Nurse Collective Bargaining Agreement
REPORTS TO: Building Principal and Supervisor of Nurses
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1.Schedules and is present at all school health services, including all physical examinations, all immunization clinics, vision and hearing rechecks, scoliosis rechecks, pediculosis checks, hepatitis checks, etc.
2.Maintains up-to-date health records
3.Assumes responsibility for informing faculty and staff of those students with special health problems, i.e. life threatening allergies, diabetic, heart, petit mal, etc.
4.Interprets health status of a student to his/her parents and school personnel without breaching confidentiality.
5.Observes students on a regular basis to determine health needs
6.Authorizes the exclusion and/or readmission of students with contagious or infectious diseases
7.Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures
8.Administers medications when necessary
9.Secures all medications
10. Assists principal in establishing sanitary conditions within the school
11. Serves as a health consultant and resource person for the classroom teacher conducting health related classes when requested
12. Contacts and visits homes of children referred by principal where related counseling is required
13. Maintains adequate first aid supplies in each school
14. Attends IDEA evaluation and reevaluation meetings
15. Advises on modification of the educational program to meet health needs of the individual student through the IDEA and 504 process
16. Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered injury or emergency illness
17. Attends committee meetings and conferences regarding health services and health curriculum including Safety Committee
18. Participates in in-service training programs
19. Prepares and submits reports as requested by the Supervisor of Nurses, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services and the Superintendent of Schools as required
20. Makes formal referrals to specialists when appropriate and conducts follow-up or referrals
21. Works with the community health agencies when necessary
22. Assists in the formation of health policies, goals and objectives of the school department
23. Performs other duties as directed by the Supervisor of Nurses, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services and the Superintendent of Schools
ADA & MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, adding machines, etc.. Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Must be able to stand, crouch and bend over for a long period of time at intervals throughout the day.
DATA CONCEPTION: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things. INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to subordinates or assistants. LANGUAGE ABILITY: Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, newsletters, schedules, manuals, invoices, requisitions, menus, recipes, journals, etc. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, evaluations, procedures, charts, surveys, articles, bid specifications, brochures, news releases, handbooks, budgets, etc. using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. Requires the ability to speak before groups of people with poise, voice control and confidence.
INTELLIGENCE: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
VERBEL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including medical, legal, accounting and marketing terminology
NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; decimals and percentages; and to apply the principles of algebra and geometry
FORM/SPATIAL/APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape
MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment.
MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as office equipment and hand tools. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
INTERPERSONAL: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instruction. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.
PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.) Must be able to communicate via telephone
