Brookfield Public Schools is looking for an excellent School Nurse to work at Huckleberry Hill Elementary School

This is a full time position. 184 days.

  • General Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Experience in school nursing and in First aid, Sports injuries, and Minor trauma.

  • Provide medical care to pupils, members of staff and to visitors while on site.

  • Promote health education throughout the School community.

  • Perform health screenings, coordinate referrals, maintain children with chronic health problems, and act as a first responder to emergencies.

  • Skill in concussion protocol, crisis intervention for acute illnesses and emotional disturbances.

  • Participate in revision of school health policies and procedures, and implementation of the school medication policy.

  • Educate faculty in blood borne illnesses, seizure precautions, and epi-pen administration.

  • Teach First Aid and Safety to faculty and students.

  • Manage difficult medical emergencies involving student injury and provide immediate first aid.

  • Work closely with the Medical Advisor, Administration, School Counselors and School Social Worker

Experience with Elementary school students preferred. Excellent verbal and written skills required. Excellent Computer skills required.

Candidate must hold a current RN License from the State of Connecticut and at least 1 year of current experience to be considered for this position.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED The Supervisor of Special Education/Pupil Personnel Services reports to the Director of Special Education/Pupil Personnel Services. SUPERVISION EXERCISED The Supervisor of Special Education/Pupil Personnel Services evaluates assigned staff, including special education teachers, school psychologists, speech-language pathologists, related services staff members, and paraprofessionals. JOB GOAL * Ensure compliance with Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) in the provision of special education instruction, services and support to students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs). * Ensure delivery of related services of school psychologists, school social workers, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, board-certified behavioral analysts (BCBAs), and others as necessary. * Maintain up-to-date knowledge of IDEIA, state regulations, and best practices in instruction and assessment for students with disabilities. * Ensure compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the development of appropriate 504 plans for students. * Develop organizational systems, procedures, professional learning opportunities, and specialized programs to meet district needs. * Engage in clear, timely communication with parents, staff, and other stakeholders. * Foster a professional environment that emphasizes trust and respect for students, families, and staff. EVALUATION Performance evaluation is subject to annual review by Director of Special Education/Pupil Personnel Services. ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED (List is not all inclusive) 1. Supervises special education staff, related services staff, and paraprofessionals through formal observations, classroom visits, and written reports. 2. Collaborates with the Director of Special Education/Pupil Personnel Services and building Principals to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate special education services and programs. 3. Identifies professional learning needs in the district; plans and conducts orientation and in-service professional development for staff. 4. Maintains a high level of knowledge regarding developing special education issues, changes in the laws and case law, and methods of educating students with disabilities, for the purpose of managing an excellent special education program. 5. Maintains a high level of knowledge regarding provision of instruction and best practices in assessment for the purpose of managing an excellent special education program. 6. Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge and understanding of autism, developmental disabilities, emotional-behavioral disabilities, and dyslexia including assessment, development of appropriate supports and programming, progress monitoring, and communication with parents and guardians. 7. Ensures high-quality IEPs are developed for all students that are fully compliant with IDEIA and the Connecticut IEP Manual, include SMART goals, and are designed to provide educational benefit in alignment with standards. 8. Assists in the hiring and assignment of special education and related services staff. 9. Regularly communicates with the parents/guardians of students. 10. Has current and comprehensive knowledge of Scientifically Researched-Based Interventions (SRBI) and its relationship to special education practices. 11. Ensures that student records are maintained and secured, in accordance with state and federal regulations. 12. Performs such other duties that may be assigned by the Director of Special Education/Pupil Personnel Services. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, CAPACITIES * Strong leadership and interpersonal skills. * Knowledge of: student learning, special education programming, state and federal regulations (IDEA, Section 504), SRBI for academics and social-emotional-behavioral skills, progress monitoring, exemplary IEPs, Connecticut standards. * Excellent verbal, written, and technology skills. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS 1. A valid Connecticut certificate endorsement (092) - Intermediate Administrator as well as certification in special education or a related field required. 2. At least five (5) years successful teaching experience as a teacher in special education or a related field such school psychology, social work, or speech and language pathology. Leadership and/or administrative experience preferred. 3. Such alternative to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
