School Nurse-Ancillary

TITLE: School Nurse

LICENSURE QUALIFICATIONS:

State Board RN Nursing License

AND

NM Public Education Department School Nurse License

(The NMPED License can be obtained by application to NMPED with

proof of a NM State Board RN Nursing License)

Summary:

The School Nurse assists in coordinating health services to students within their assigned school and ensures that all health services comply with Federal and State laws and standards and District Policy. The RN provides assistance and care of sick and injured students, maintains health and medical documentation for the school and is part of the educational team for health education and promotion.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

1.Help students attain an optimum level of physical, social, and emotional health.

2.Establish and maintain a comprehensive health program for students, parents, and

employees of the district.

3.Ensure that all activities conform to district guidelines.

4.Communicate effectively with members of the school district and community.

5.Work effectively with community organizations.

6.Work cooperatively with colleagues, supervisors, and administrators.

7.Support the value of an education.

8.Adhere to confidentiality laws and regulations.

9.Respond productively to change and handle other tasks as assigned.

10. Support the philosophy and mission of the Portales Municipal Schools.

11. Conduct student health appraisals, including:

a. Medical examinations

b. Vision screening

c. Hearing screening

d. Weighing and measuring

e. Follow-up of noted medical issues

f. Consultation with teachers and parents regarding health problems

Qualifications:

1.High School Diploma/GED

2.Miniumum of Associates Degree

3.Current State Board of Nursing License (Registered Nurse)

4.Two years nursing experience

Safety/Health and Other Requirements:

1.Knowledgeable of universal hygiene precautions

2.A FBI fingerprint background check will be conducted on all new hires of the Portales Municipal School District. Continued employment will be contingent upon the results of the background check.

Equipment/Material Handled:

Must know how to properly operate or be willing to operate all equipment including current technology.

Work Environment:

Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine.

Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. After hours work may be required. May make site or home visits when needed and appropriate.
