School Nurse

POSITION:

Services as a School Nurse include providing services to students/children aged pre-school to 22 years of age through health assist support. Services as a Nurse include executing all functions related to the primary health care needs of children in the community in which the school based clinic is located.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under direction of Director of Student Services and Health Services Specialist, assist in coordination of regular Covid-19 testing, contact tracing, immuniziation, and training.

  • Conduct physical examinations to assess students' hearing, vision and others.

  • Examine students for illness, injury and medical emergency; administer first aid as necessary; document and report unusual or critical cases to appropriate authorities.

  • Monitor and train staff in specialized physical health care procedures; teach a variety of health-related topics on a one-to-one or group basis; conduct parent conferences and counseling related to health issues as necessary.

  • Provide health information and services to students regarding such issues as medications and health care procedures; provide information to school site personnel within the District; communicate with parents, physicians, specialists, physical therapists, and health service agencies.

  • Process paperwork to assure students receive physical exams, immunizations and other examinations and require follow-up care; prepare and maintain various health and other related files, records and reports according to established procedures; assure compliance with State mandates related to health care.

  • Operate a variety of specialized health service office equipment, such as stethoscope, electronic thermometer, ophthalmoscope, otoscope, audiometer, and copier.

  • Refer students, parents or guardians to appropriate community resources for recommended health service programs.

  • Participate as a member of IEP teams as needed; provided input to IEP's; observe and assess student progress; prepare reports as necessary.

  • Provide in-service training to District personnel regarding specialized physical health care, communicable diseases and other health concerns.

  • Serve on various school committees and attend meetings as assigned.

  • Train and supervise health assistants, specialized health care providers, and or District staff in providing health services to students.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

  • IEP requirements.

  • Pediatric or Family Nurse scope of practice in pediatrics.

  • Medication effects and proper administration procedures.

  • Genetic and environment disorders, which effect cognitive, motor, visual, and auditory development.

  • Modern medical terminology, equipment and techniques.

  • Accepted methods and principles of personal hygiene.

  • Diagnostic methods for medical conditions and diseases.

  • Accepted screening/testing techniques for hearing, vision and other screenings.

  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

  • Oral and written communication skills.

  • Public health agencies and local health care resources.

  • Health and safety regulations, mandates, policies and regulations pertaining to a comprehensive student health program.

  • Modern office practices, procedures and equipment.

  • Record-keeping techniques.

  • Computer functions including data entry and email processes.

Ability to:

  • Provide independent patient care services under the medical direction of a physician preceptor.

  • Make Clinical judgments in an effective and efficient manner.

  • Work with school aged children.

  • Perform technical duties related to assigned components of the IEP program.

  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action during routine and emergency situations.

  • Train and provide health information to parents, students and staff.

  • Prepare and deliver oral presentations regarding health and safety issues and communicable diseases.

  • Identify various health needs, and unusual and critical cases such as child abuse, and recommend appropriate action.

  • Maintain records and prepare comprehensive reports according to established District rules, regulations and State mandates.

  • Screen students for vision, hearing and other problems.

  • Counsel and provide health related information to parents of school-aged students.

  • Establish and maintain files, records, reports, and referrals.

  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree in Nursing or closely related field, graduate of a Nursing program which conforms to the California Board of Registered Nursing Standards as specified in Section 1484.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION/S:

Current California Registered Nurse License, or current California Pediatric or Family Nurse Practitioner license, and current First Aid/CPR certificate. A valid California Health Services Credential. (If you have not applied for the credential, HR can help you apply for it at time of new hire processing)

LICENSES, CREDENTIALS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

A valid California driver's license and insurability with the District's liability carrier.
