This recruitment will be used to establish an Eligibility List for the current School Library Technician II vacancies shown below as well as any future vacancies. This list will be active for three (3) months with the possibility to be extended.

The School Library Technician II works under the general direction of a Librarian, Media Center Teacher, or other certificated staff assigned to supervise a school library or a site administrator in a large secondary school, perform specialized library clerical and technical tasks related to the acquisition, processing, circulation, cataloging, maintenance, disposition, and record-keeping for library media materials.

Position Schedule (for any future vacancies):

  • Positions in this classification typically work 10 months of the year.

  • Set schedules for positions in this classification might vary but are typically 20-40 hours per week.

  • Specific hours and schedules will be discussed during the interview process.

  • Positions greater than 20 hours per week qualify for District Paid health and wellness benefits for employees and eligible dependents.

This is apromotional/open opportunity, which means that current monthly salaried employees receive precedence over other candidates on the eligible list.

  • For a promotional/open posting, the top ten internal applicants will be provided unless there is an insufficient number and then the list will be supplemented with the top external applicants to make up the ten (Employment Regulations for the Classified Service of the San Diego Unified School District: Article 2, Section 9).

Examples of Duties

E = Essential Functions

  • Order, process, store, and circulate library materials, multimedia materials, and computer technology materials and equipment used in school libraries. E

  • Provide classroom teachers and support staff with library materials, including textbooks. E

  • Assist pupils and staff in locating and using library materials and equipment, including electronic information retrieval systems. E

  • Assist library certificated staff with instruction of pupils in library skills and research activities. E

  • Assume responsibility for the routine operation of the library in the absence of library certificated staff. E

  • Maintain records of acquisitions, withdrawals, and inventory; maintain computerized circulation system. E

  • Prepare a variety of reports and correspondence for library operations; maintain records of expenditures for library materials, lost or damaged materials, and textbooks. E

  • Review condition of materials and make decisions regarding repair or recommendations for replacement. E

  • Maintain computerized online public access catalog. E

  • Make minor repairs to a library computer and maintain other library equipment; contact district staff or vendors for computer repair, software problems, or other related activities.

  • Contact parents regarding lost or damaged library materials.

  • Train and direct the work of assigned clerical staff and/or pupil assistants under the supervision of certificated staff.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of training, experience, and/or education equivalent to possession of a certificate of completion as a library technician from a two-year community college program. Two years of school or public library clerical experience supplemented by formal, directly related coursework may be substituted for possession of the certificate.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Modern library organization, procedures, and library record-keeping routines, including familiarity with one or more computerized library circulation, online public access, and information retrieval systems. Reading and writing English communication skills.

EXAMINATION PROCESS:

Only those candidates whose application demonstrates a combined education and experience which meets the minimum requirements for this position will be considered qualified and advanced in the examination process.

All positions require qualified candidates to pass the examination process which may include one or more of the following components:

  • An application screening and evaluation based on the candidate's education, work history, and responses to the supplemental questions. Please note that not all qualified applicants will advance to subsequent phases of the examination process.

  • A multiple-choice exam specific to the position.

  • The multiple-choice exam will be conducted remotely utilizing an online testing platform. Access to the internet and the use of a camera-ready desktop/laptop with a microphone are required to participate in this process.
