The Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf (ENCSD) is a state school serving the 54 easternmost counties that provides a specialized learning environment for deaf and hard of hearing students, kindergarten through 12th grade, following a typical school calendar.  The ENCSD offers students an academic setting with standards-based instruction, low classroom ratios, career and vocational skills development, current technology, and an overall accessible environment for learning through American Sign Language.

  A boarding program is available for enrolled students residing outside of Wilson County.   The ENCSD seeks to promote both intentional and experiential learning to provide continued advancement in student academic achievement and social/emotional well-being.

We are actively recruiting for a School Guidance Counselor. The School Guidance Counselor is responsible for providing guidance and counseling services to students, staff members, and parents as directed by the School Principal.

This is an 11-month position that follows the Academic Calendar.

Licensed educators at Eastern NC School for the Deaf are paid according to the appropriate placement on the NC Certified Teacher Salary Schedules.  An 8% monthly teaching supplement (based on monthly salary) is also included.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Program Planning

o The school counselor establishes the school counseling program and develops activities and resources to implement and evaluate the program. The school counselor involves other school staff in making decision about the school counseling program.

  • Counseling

o The school counselor provides the individual and group counseling services to meet the developmental, preventative and remedial needs of students.

  • Consulting

o The school counselor consults with students, parents, teachers, and other school community personnel to assist in meeting the needs of the students.

  • Coordinating

o The school counselor coordinates all counseling services for students and assist with the coordination and implementation of student services in the school. The counselor also assist with teachers with the Guidance Curriculum.

  • Student Appraisal

o The school counselor accurately interprets test results and other student data. The counselor also assists teachers with the educational placement of student by using appropriate education assessment strategies.

  • Professional Practices and Development

o The school counselor adheres to ethical standards of the counseling profession, abides by the laws, policies, and procedures that govern the schools. The counselor also participates in professional associations and upgrades professional knowledge and skills when needed.

  • The school counselor is subject to all other duties as assigned by the principal

  • Must have a NC School Guidance Counselor's license or credentials to obtain.

Master's Degree in School Counseling and must be licensed or eligible for licensing by the NC Dept. of Public Instruction as a School Guidance Counselor.

Preference will be given to applicants who are skilled in American Sign Language.

All certified educators working at Eastern NC School for the Deaf are paid from the legislated salary schedule. This schedule is approved annually by the NC General Assembly and sets a minimum pay based on the educator's years of experience and education level.  ENCSD also offers an 8% monthly supplement.

Degrees must be from an appropriately accredited institution.

Pre-employment drug testing and criminal background checks are required for all positions at Eastern NC School for the Deaf.

Applicants seeking Veteran's Preference for employment with State Government must attach either a Form DD-214.

Applicants seeking National Guard preference must attach an NGB 23A (RPAS) if they are a current member of the NC National Guard.  If an applicant is a former NC National Guard Member who served for at least 6 years and was discharged under honorable conditions, they must attach either a DD256 or NGB 22 along with their State application.

Applicants with degrees not conferred at a United States college or university must attach a degree verification that their degree is equivalent to a similar degree form a US institution.

In order to receive credit for work history and credentials, the applicant must list the information on the online application under the Work Experience section; specifically, "Duties Summary".  Any information omitted from the application cannot be considered for qualifying credit.  Attached resumes, cover letters and reference information will not be used for screening for qualifying credit or in lieu of a completed application.  "See Resume" or "See Attachment" on a submitted application instead of a completed application with detailed work duties, will not be accepted.

Individuals who have earned at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 may be offered employment to teach if certain additional criteria are met.  These prospects must gain employment AND affiliate with an Educator Preparation Program (EPP) before the Eastern NC School for the Deaf can apply for the new teacher's Residency License.
