This is a 12-month position

Offering a $7500 sign on bonus, contingent upon availability of funds, for Skilled, Highly Qualified teachers. Skilled, Highly Qualified is defined as having obtained a NC DPI Certified Teaching license with VI (Visually Impaired) endorsement(s) and as is applicable to the student population/classroom served.

The Governor Morehead School for the Blind (GMS) provides residential and day educational programs to blind and/or visually impaired students, ages five to 22 years. Governor Morehead School strives to offer specialized educational opportunities, community outreach, and an immersive environment for North Carolina students with visual impairments and additional disabilities. Through unique and expert instruction, GMS creates a dynamic and inclusive environment for students to reach their highest potential in developing knowledge, skills, confidence, and values that will support them as independent, life-long learners to contribute to our global society.

GMS serves students across the state of North Carolina through K-12 enrollment, outreach short-term events, and summer school programs. The campus is in Raleigh, NC. We are actively recruiting for a Highly Qualified School Educator/Extended Content Standards Teacher. This position provides instruction in all components of the instruction to students on the extended content standards graded 9-12 and beyond.

The primary purpose of this position is:

To provide supervision/ monitoring of the educational services, programs, and support provided to students at Governor Morehead School for the Blind (GMS) through a students Individualized Educational Plan (IEP).  This position is responsible for GMS's compliance with NC Exception Childrens (EC) Department of Public Instruction (DPI) state and federal education laws, regulations, and policy. They will serve as a case manager for a large number of students and will coordinate, schedule, and facilitate compliant and productive IEP meetings.  This position will work directly with teachers on specific teaching strategies, identify learning gaps, creating IEP goals and objectives, and implement specially designed instruction aligned with the students IEP.  This position may work with students in small groups or one-on-one to deliver specially designed instruction as needed. The candidate must have a working knowledge of special education and be familiar with the process of maintaining and growing professional learning communities (PLCs) and professional developments.  This position works under the direction of the Principal.

Monitoring of educational services, programs, and supports:

  • Perform internal audits of students' IEP's

  • Keep administrators and teachers up to date with state and federal EC laws, policies, and regulations.

  • Coach and mentor teachers to ensure the delivery of specially designed instruction as outlined by their IEPs.

  • Review all information and data in ECATS.

  • Monitor and collect progress monitoring data.

  • Review and revise IEPs as needed.

  • Review and coordinate accommodations with testing coordinator and teachers.

Case Management for student's IEP's:

  • Using multiple sources of data, create and maintain students IEPs.

  • Maintain all student records and files in ECATS.

  • Coordinate, schedule, and facilitate compliant and productive IEP meetings.

  • Work with teachers in delivering specially designed instruction and implementing evidence-based practices.

  • Work directly with teachers, educational development aides (EDA), occupational therapists, physical therapists, and orientation and mobility specialists, to ensure that the student's needs are met comprehensively.

  • Identify accommodations needed for classroom instruction and testing.

  • Review progress monitoring data.

  • Coordinate related service providers and support their work with assessment data and documentation in ECATS.

Instructional support:

  • Work directly with teachers on specific teaching strategies, identify learning gaps,

  • Work directly with teachers to create IEP goals and objectives and implement specially designed instruction aligned with the students IEP.

  • Work directly with students to conduct formal and informal assessments.

  • Work directly with students in small groups or one-on-one to deliver specially designed instruction as needed.

  • Review assessment and progress monitoring data to support instructional planning.

  • Work directly with staff on the use and implementation of ECATS.

Advocacy and training:

  • Advocates for the needs and rights of students with visual impairments, both within the school and in the community

  • Identifies and provides professional developments, training opportunities to staff in the area of instruction, EC best practices, and compliance.

  • Provides support when requested to Local Education Agencies (LEAs) for the purpose of the enrollment and assessment of students.

  • Serves as a key member of GMS's enrollment team as required by GMS's enrollment process.

  • Other duties as assigned include the transportation or monitoring of students on transportation.

  • Experience of specially designed instructions to support students with visual impairments.

MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES: 

  • Background in teaching students with visual impairments.

  • Thorough knowledge of IEP process.

  • Knowledge of classroom instruction and assessments.

  • Teacher of the Visually Impaired, and/or willing to obtain the necessary add-on certification to teach this group of students.

  • 3+ years of teaching in a special education setting.

NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to pass drug screening.

  • Must be able to pass Criminal Background Check.

  • Valid NC teaching certification.

  • Experience working with students having blindness and/or visual impairments in an educational setting.
