Position Title: School Counselor

Reports to: Principal

Workdays: 190 Days

Position Summary: The School Counselor promotes student success by responding to school and student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses the academic, career and personal/social development of all students.

Education: Master's degree required

License/Certification:

  • Valid Georgia Certificate in or eligible for a certificate in School Counseling

Experience:

  • Minimum three years administration/supervisory experience preferred.

Physical Activity:

  • Stooping or crouching

  • Walk and/or stand for prolonged periods of time.

Knowledge

  • Communicates effectively and promotes good public relations with students, teachers, parents,

  • Works with peers/supervisors in a considerate and cooperative manner and assists others when needed.

  • Demonstrates patience and care for all students.

  • Organizational Skills

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.Development and Management of Comprehensive Counseling Program

o Develops and maintains a written ASCA aligned plan for effective delivery of the comprehensive school counseling program.

o Communicates the plan and goals of the comprehensive school counseling program to stakeholders (e.g. school governance board, LSAC, PTA, administrators, teachers, parents, and community/business leaders)

o Provides services to students via classroom guidance, individual counseling, group counseling,

o Maintains current and appropriate resources and effectively communicates to stakeholder groups (i.e. school and community-based resources)

o Uses all available data (e.g. formative, summative, testing/assessment, standardized) to develop programs and services that meet students' needs.

2.Delivery of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program

o Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities that meet students' needs.

o Incorporates into counseling program life skills that students need to have to be successful in the 21st century.

o Provides comprehensive college and career guidance and ensures compliance with all Bridge Law and CCRPI requirements.

o Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals, and plans.

o Interprets and utilizes student data accurately and appropriately.

o Collaborates and communicates with parents, guardians, and teachers in the development of educational, career and life plans.

o Develops and implements an appropriate student referral process and follow-up process as needed.

o Provides individual and group counseling to students with social and emotional needs.

o Implements school wide prevention/intervention programs to support the emotional, social, and behavioral needs of students.

o Assists teachers, parents/guardians and students and others in interpreting and understanding student data.

o Utilizes all available technology resources effectively, including Student Information System, in the implementation and monitoring of comprehensive school counseling program.

3.Accountability

o Facilitates Tier 3, SST, 504, and other student support meetings.

o Conducts annual program review to evaluate extent of program implementation and effectiveness.

o Measures results of comprehensive school counseling program activities and shares results with Principal and other relevant.

o stakeholders, as appropriate

o Monitors academic performance and other relevant performance data (e.g. behavior, attendance, etc.) and utilizes data to provide appropriate interventions for students in need.

o Ensures students are appropriately advised and registered for courses to meet on track (4 year) graduation requirements, career cluster/pathways, college entrance/access and other post-secondary goals.

o Collaborates with Graduation Coach and other support personnel to ensure students receive appropriate remediation, test prep, content recovery, credit recovery and other supports to attain on track graduation.

o Accurately reviews and appropriately maintains student records related to counseling and advisement (e.g. evaluation of student transcripts, confidential student information)

o Participates in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills.

o Promotes positive relationships with students, parents, school staff, and community.

o Communicates effectively and often with parents about programs, activities, and services to support academic, college/career and personal goals of students.

o Utilizes technology and effective communication tools (email/newsletter, website, school messenger, social media, parent nights, etc.), as appropriate, to inform students, parents and other relevant stakeholder groups about programs, interventions, and activities.

4.Abides by all Code of Ethics for Educators and Board policies.

5.Supports the mission and vision of the district.

6.Manages the development and maintenance of an effective communication and public relations program for customers and stakeholders.

7.Exhibits leadership through collaboration, modeling of openness and integrity, empowering others and leading through values and vision.

8.Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the principal may assign.
