The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the positions of School Counselor.

DEFINITION: Under direction, assists in planning, developing, and implementing a program of guidance services to promote the growth and development of each individual student. Counsels students individually, regarding educational and career choices, personal and social concerns, and the formulation of sound long-range plans. Consults with parents, staff, and community

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

1.Master's degree from an accredited college or university with an approved program of Student Personnel Services.

2.New Jersey Permanent Student Personnel Services Certificate.

3.Three (3) years successful teaching or counseling experience, preferred.

4.Evidence of successful experience in guidance related activities.

5.Letters of recommendation, which should include one (1) from current principal or supervisor.

6.Possession of a driver's license, valid in New Jersey, only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.Conducts early screening to assist in the identification of students with special needs and talents, students who are over-aged and under-credited, and students with physical and emotional challenges that have impacted their learning; and makes referrals to appropriate services, and support programs or agencies.

2.Provides counseling to potential dropouts to identify alternative academic and social support program options.

3.Conducts interviews with students and families in preparation for making referrals to appropriate school placements.

4.Communicates with feeding schools, provides information on school offerings, and assist students and families in selecting an appropriate match.

5.Supports on-going orientation activities for new students and their parents, beginning in September and continuing throughout the school year.

6.Prepares and maintains appropriate records and reports, as required.

7.Assists students in evaluating their abilities and interests, strengths, and weaknesses through use of records, tests, inventories, observations, consultations, and interviews.

8.Assists Enrollment staff in interpretation and use of student records and tests; interprets same data for students and parents.

9.Updates and confirms student graduation eligibility following a review of student transcripts



  1. Administers and interprets interest inventories and aptitude tests for students as they relate to educational and career planning; interprets achievement test results for students, parents and staff.

  2. Inform students and parents about the NPS graduation requirements.

  3. Complete transcript /graduation audits and inform students and parents of the outcome Consults with parents and administrators to bring about better adjustment of students.

  4. Consults and cooperates with other supportive services personnel to inform student and school-wide goal development and intervention planning.

  5. Participates in conferences conducted by the Student Support Team and Child Study Team.

  6. Cooperates with community agencies involved with students, such agencies as Aspira, Essex County Welfare, Division of Youth and Family Services, and the New Jersey State Employment Services to ensure continuity of services.

  7. Interviews new students and recommends appropriate class placement.

  8. Reviews student transcripts to assess progress toward graduation and develop a plan for course completion.

  9. Participates in professional learning committees, professional development workshops, in-service trainings, and administrative meetings to keep abreast of new trends and techniques in the field of guidance and youth development.


REPORTS TO: Principal

SALARY, EMPLOYMENT PERIOD AND UNION AFFILIATION

1.Salary Range: $56,500 - $100,041

2.Employment Period: Ten (10) Month

3.Union Affiliation: N.T.U. (Newark Teacher's Union)
