JOB TITLE: Counselor 7-12

START DATE: 2024-2025

SALARY SCHEDULE: Certified Teacher Salary Range: $44,500 - $76,600

POSITION SCHEDULE: Staff contract days in accordance with the school calendar + an additional 15 days

POSITION SUMMARY

The secondary school counselor at Hillsboro school district establishes and implements a comprehensive school counseling program for ALL students including the content areas of academic, social/emotional and career counseling through school counseling curriculum, individual planning, responsive services and system support.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Provides a comprehensive counseling program for all students in grades 7-12.

  • Abides by and assists in maintaining an up-to-date school counseling manual for the school district.

  • Abides by the school board policies and ethical standards for school counselors.

  • Is knowledgeable of the district school board policies mentioning school counseling and the district CSIP plan.

  • Develops an annual calendar of counseling activities, events and classroom visits and shares this with administration, parents, students and staff as appropriate.

  • Facilitates the process of a needs assessment/ planning survey every 3-5 years to gather input from stakeholders such as parents, student, board of education members and school administration.

  • Completes an IIR (Internal Improvement Review) with building administration annually and uses the information to guide program improvements.

  • Completes and reviews counselor specific Professional Development Growth Plan that is aligned with Comprehensive School Counseling Program objectives.

  • Completes Time of Task Analysis at necessary times.

  • Uses data (planning surveys, student data, building/district goals/teacher/advisory committee input) to guide school counseling curriculum and activities.

  • Reviews and updates school counseling written curriculum annually.

  • Delivers and facilitates the school counseling curriculum to all students at all grade levels through classroom lessons, large groups, assemblies, events and partnerships with teachers.

  • Uses curriculum assessments to determine students' knowledge and growth in the areas of social/emotional, academic and career development and uses curriculum assessment data to drive instruction.

  • Facilitates grade level appropriate career planning.

  • Assists students in using a variety of appraisal tools to identify student strengths and interests for educational/career planning.

  • Assists students and families in transitions from home to school, grade to grade, building to building and secondary education to post-secondary options.

  • Provides a systematic process for students, parents and teachers to have input to develop, review and revise individual Personal Plans of Study.

  • Provides brief (within the counselor's scope of practice, limited in duration and intermittent) individual counseling services to students experiencing problems that may be interfering with their social/emotional, academic, and career development within the school setting.

  • Provides opportunities for small group counseling as needed.

  • Provides brief crisis counseling services to students experiencing problems that may be interfering with their social/emotional, academic and career development within the school setting.

  • Provides appropriate referrals to outside agencies as needed.

  • Pursues professional growth through counselor specific professional development.

MARGINAL DUTIES

  • Participates in professional organizations, professional growth activities such as appropriate seminars, courses, workshops, and staff development activities.

  • Conducts annual studies of the school population as directed by the principal.

  • Formulates annual recommendations to the Principal for group guidance activities and carries out the agreed upon group guidance program.

  • Participates and serve as LEA for IEP meetings.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Master's Degree from four-year College or University and a minimum of one year of experience.

  • Missouri State Department of Education - Secondary Counseling Certificate.
