CERTIFIED POSITION DESCRIPTION
Title: Middle School Counselor
Qualifications:
Valid Missouri certificate issued by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in K-8 Counseling
Master's Degree in Education or Counseling
A minimum of two years teaching experience
Reports To: Middle School Principal
Supervises: Counselors' Secretary
Job Goal:
Today's school counselors are vital members of the education team. They help all students in the areas of academic achievement, personal/social development and career development, ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow.
Performance Objectives:
Implement middle school guidance curriculum and evaluate and revise such programs on an ongoing basis to include collaboration with teachers to present school counseling core curriculum lessons
To assist in the transition and vertical integration from elementary and into the high school
Counsel students individually and in groups about education as well as personal and social issues
Consult with teachers, parents, and students regarding the developmental needs of students and insure the appropriate placement in relation to those needs
Aide in the development of a master schedule and assist in the scheduling of classes for individual students
Collaborate with High School Counselor(s) on transition from eighth grade to high school
Collaborate with Elementary School Counselor(s) on transition from fifth grade to middle school
Refer students with severe problems to the appropriate community resources
Collaborate with administrative staff and be involved with appropriate individual and group testing in order to insure proper placement, planning, and assessment of school curricula
Help the school principal identify and resolve student issues, needs and problems
Advocate for students at individual education plan meetings, student study teams and school attendance review boards
Analyze disaggregated data
Comply with federal, state, local, and Board of Education policies and regulations
Other professional duties as may be assigned by the Principal
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Employment is on an annual basis. The Building Principal makes employment recommendations in March of each year for the next fiscal year. The final decision is made by the Board of Education. Salary is based on the Certificated Salary Schedule adopted annually by the Board of Education.
EVALUATION
Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of MSBA Board of Education Policy on Evaluation of Professional Staff (GCN)
