MOUNTAIN VIEW SCHOOL DISTRICT

SCHOOL COUNSELOR INTERN

Description of Position

Under the direct supervision of a school psychologist or credentialed school counselor, provides counseling services to pupils and parents. Uses counseling and consultation techniques to promote pupil motivation and adjustment to school, community, and home environments.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Implements the philosophy, goals, policies, and objectives of the school district as adopted by the Board of Education.

  • Assists teachers in creating a flexible program and classroom environment which enhances individual growth.

  • Assists teachers in motivating pupils to develop the skills and attitudes which promote the acquisition of knowledge and participation in a democratic society.

  • Provides services to pupils through consultation, individual and group counseling, and classroom involvement.

  • Assists teachers in using the principles of behavior management and other useful techniques in the classroom.

  • Assists pupils in making academic progress consistent with their abilities.

  • Counsels pupils and their parents regarding matters relating to learning attitude.

  • Assists the psychological services department in the preparation of assessments.

  • Screens children for possible Attention Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD).

  • Assesses the counseling needs of identified special education children and develops and implements appropriate IEP goals and objectives.

  • Attends IEP meetings when appropriate.

  • Performs other related services as assigned.

Non-Instructional Duties

  • Establishes effective rapport with pupils and school personnel.

  • Establishes a working relationship with parents and members of the school community.

  • Assists pupils in effecting a smooth transition between school and home, and between school levels.

  • Provides assistance to staff in planning and conducting parent-teacher conferences, and participates in conferences upon request.

  • Provides information and assistance to parents in their understanding of child development.

  • Informs parents of available community resources.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Has completed or is in the process of completing coursework leading to a Master's degree in School Counseling, Psychology, or Marriage and Family Therapy.

Personal Qualifications:

  • Appearance, grooming, and personality which establishes a desirable example for students.

  • Ability to communicate and relate well to students, parents, and staff.

Desired Qualification

Bilingual Spanish/English

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:1.Bachelors Degree.2.Completed or is in the process of completing course work leading to a Masters Degree in School Counseling., Psychology or Marriage and Family Therapy.DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:1.Bilingual (English/Spanish; English/Mandarin/Cantonese preferred)
