JOB DESCRIPTION: ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COUNSELOR
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
CONTRACT: 185 Days
QUALIFICATIONS: Master's Degree in School Counseling or related field
Valid Indiana Teacher License
Effective oral, written, electronic communication skills

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Elementary School Counselor provides a comprehensive counseling program for students
at the elementary level, including the personal/social, academic and career development of
each student. The counselor works with teachers, parents, and staff to enhance their
effectiveness in helping students' personal/social, academic, and career development while
providing appropriate support to the total school program. The Counselor will work to ensure a
safe learning environment for students and staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Meets all professional obligations and responsibilities.
Counsel students individually and/or in small group or class settings.
Maintains and respects confidentiality of student and school personnel information,
while maintaining the safety and welfare for all students and staff.
Follows all local, state and federal laws, regulations, and policies regarding children's
educational welfare.
Reports any pertinent information to the proper authorities in cases of child
endangerment, neglect, or abuse.
Models professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all
interactions.
Understands that students differ in their learning styles and motivates students to
achieve maximum potential.
Consults regularly with administrators, teachers, and parents regarding the needs of
students and serves as referral source for special services.
Collaborates with counselor colleagues on a regular basis.
Ensures the adequate supervision of students throughout the school day.
Establishes and maintains a positive rapport with students and creates a supportive
learning environment for all students that encourages social interaction, active
engagement in learning and self-motivation.
Performs other duties directed by the principal as deemed necessary for the
improvement of student success.
Pay will be determined upon hiring, per the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
