The School Counselor is responsible for supporting students throughout their high school experience in achieving their best potential in their academic and post high school planning goals. The counselor works with parents, community, teachers, student support professionals, administrators, and higher ed and workplace professionals to provide opportunities for support and success. The candidate will demonstrate knowledge of national and state school counseling best practices, commitment to equity, superb interpersonal skills, strong oral and written expression, and a commitment to teamwork, collaboration, and flexibility. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Implements comprehensive developmental school counseling program in accordance with current state and national school counseling standards

  • Provides individual and group sessions to students in the areas of academic planning and success, career awareness, and socio-emotional development

  • Serves as case manager for 504 students, and participates as a member of the Student Intervention Team and Planning and Placement Teams, and other teams and committees that support student progress

  • Reviews and interprets student performance data, modifications, accommodations, and intervention plans for all students

  • Plans, coordinates, and conducts department activities including college fairs, field trips, informational programs, and other extensions of the school counseling curriculum

  • Provides academic counseling on an individual and group basis

  • Registers/assesses needs of new students

  • Assists as needed in the administration of standardized testing

  • Participates in activities that will support professional growth of knowledge and skills

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to school counseling, including use of and protection of student data

  • Knowledge of various models and best practices of counseling

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, advocacy, leadership, and collaboration skills with students, staff, families, and the community

  • Knowledge of and/or demonstrate the ability to learn and implement Operating Systems (i.e. Windows); Office suites (i.e. Microsoft Office, Google Docs) Presentation Software (i.e. PowerPoint, Keynote); Spreadsheets (i.e. Excel, Google Spreadsheets); Student Information Systems (i.e. Naviance, Power School); or any other technology deemed relevant

  • Knowledge of pre/post high school program eligibility requirements

  • Knowledge of college/university admissions processes, scholarship programs and other educational opportunities
