The School Counselor promotes the attainment of academic, career and personal-social competencies for all students on his/her caseload. The school counselor contributes to the implementation of a competency-based school counseling program based on the National Standards as outlined by the American School Counselor Association and The Massachusetts School Counselors Association.

The school counselor's time is divided between implementing school counseling curriculum, assisting with individual student planning, service on interdisciplinary teams, delivering traditional school counseling services, consultation with staff and parents, and crisis intervention. Counselors report directly to the department's appointed Team Leader who is responsible to the school's Director of Student Services.

Responsibilities and Duties:
1.Contribute to program planning and development.
2.Co-teach prescribed Career Enrichment classes at each grade level and present prescribed workshops to assigned vocational areas.
3.Interpret and utilize student data in order to facilitate appropriate student interventions.
4.Assist students on caseload, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals, and plans. Collaborate with parents/guardians and educators to support students in achieving these goals and plans as needed.
5.Assist students with the college application, scholarship, and financial aid process.
6.Use technology resources to support and enhance the school counseling program.
7.Assist with the course recommendation and scheduling process.
8.Assist juniors and seniors in completing their college and career action plans for their portfolios.
9.Assist students with academic and career planning.
10.Review student progress/achievement/performance as needed and initiate follow up in a timely manner.
11.Provide individual counseling to students. Consult and collaborate effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders. Facilitate referrals for school adjustment counseling, SBHC, or outside counseling services as needed.
12.Serve as a member of the School Crisis Team.
13.Participate in planning School Counseling Events such as, but not limited to;

  • Spring College Fair at BVT

  • College decision days

  • Parent College Workshop

  • Evening college financing/admissions seminars

  • Depression/mental health awareness programs
    14.Participate in orientation activities.
    15.Serve as a member of the Scholarship Committee.
    16.Implement Depression Screening.
    17.Participate in SRT, IEP and EPP meetings for all students on caseload.
    18.Develop 504 plans and ICAP's for students on caseload and serve as the liaison.
    19.Assist with recruitment and admissions.
    20.Other school counseling functions as assigned.
    21.Maintain and safeguard student records in accordance with school and state policy.
    22.The candidate must be able to counsel effectively within in-person and remote educational models.
    Qualifications:

1.Minimum of Master's Degree.
2.Certified by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education as a School Guidance Counselor at the secondary level.
3.Possess demonstrated successful professional counseling experience at the secondary school level.
4.Possess computer literacy skills necessary to manage data
5.Possess solid oral and written communication skills.
6.Possess a thorough knowledge of testing, assessments, methodologies and learning theories.
7.Must be able to inspire excellence, achieve consensus and respond effectively to the system's mission with humor and enthusiasm.
8.Knowledge of the MA Model of School Counseling and the American School Counselor Association.
9.Knowledge of/experience with development of Career Plans as outlined by the DESE.
10.Possess a personal history which is exemplary, supported with references.
11.Be physically and emotionally able to fulfill instructional responsibilities and duties.
12.Strive to complete sixty (60) hours of professional development each year.

Compensation:
1.Based on credentials, approvals and experience, the successful candidate will be paid in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School Teachers' Association and the Blackstone Valley Regional School District Committee.
2.All other benefits provided by the Agreement apply.
