Position begins 24/25 school year. Salary Schedule is based on the 2024-2025 school year.

This is a 10-month/renewable position with multiple openings available.

New hires typically begin at Step 1 on the Salary Schedule.

TITLE: School Bus Monitor

SUPERVISOR: Transportation Supervisor

JOB TYPE: This is a 10-month Classified Position, split-shift 2 hours/day OR 4 hr/day, Monday

  • Friday. Multiple Openings.

WORK HOURS: 6:30am

  • 8:30am AND 2:30 - 4:30pm (split shift)

ASSIGNMENT: Under the direction of the Transportation Supervisor or Designee, assists the Bus Driver in providing safe and punctual transportation.

Observes and monitors behavior of children to promote their wellbeing and safety while being transported to and from school. Focuses on and addresses specific student needs that cannot be managed from the driver's seat. Actively engaged in and involved in the safe boarding, transportation and exiting of passengers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Ability to meet the physical, mental, and other requirements necessary to perform job related functions.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written communication.
Ability to work and communicate with students, parents and school personnel in a positive manner.
Ability to maintain a patient, positive, and persistent attitude.
Ability to pass a background test and pre-employment drug screening.
Ability to travel for an extended period of time on a school bus, seated in different locations throughout the vehicle, while on curvy/winding routes, without experiencing motion sickness.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Work as a team with the driver to teach students how to ride the bus safely.
Monitor students while on the bus; assign seats in designated areas, maintain safety and order on the bus, and provide first aid to ill or injured students when needed.
Assist students and other passengers with safe loading and unloading from the bus in both emergency situations and regular transport at the school and/or bus stop.
Demonstrate good judgment and effective management of student behavior in a school bus environment.
Ensure that all passengers are in appropriate safety restraint systems and seatbelts if required.
Understand the needs and requirements of the special education students riding the school bus and ensure proper care during the transportation process.
Prepare for and assist with emergency evacuations. Handle emergency situations calmly and quickly.
Attend scheduled meetings and safety programs.
Timely report unsafe incidents, acts, or conditions which require the attention of supervisory personnel.
Cooperate with district staff to resolve problems in a professional manner.
Perform other related tasks as assigned by the transportation supervisor.

Exhibit regular, prompt attendance. Ability to follow an assignment schedule.
Wear appropriate safety attire for the position.
Follow all district or supervisor polices, rules, regulations, memos, emails, bulletins, announcements, applicable position description and reasonable requests by proper authority.
Ability to learn and communicate the Bus Rules
Assists drivers with route information, directions, bus stop and student information.
Abide by all confidentiality requirements and student privacy laws.
Willingness to attend driver meetings, workshops and training sessions.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written communication.
Ability to communicate clearly and appropriately in speech and in writing.
Ability to work successfully in a team environment.
Read, understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Accurately transfer, record and convey information and materials, as required by the position.
Adhere to the district requirements for a drug-free workplace.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is primarily performed on a school bus, or in a school or district environment, and may include cleaning agents and gasoline/propane/diesel smells, human bodily fluid cleanup and repetitive work.
Responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of others.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 and below 32 degrees and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces.
The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you may have to raise your voice to be heard.
May require occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
Involves sitting, walking or standing. Will frequently bend or twist at the neck or trunk while performing the duties of this job.
Climb and descend steps with a maximum step height of 17 ½ inches.
Carry of drag a 125 person 30 feet in 30 seconds or less.
Exit an emergency door opening 24 x 48 inches at least 42 inches from the ground in 10 seconds or less.
Assists with the loading and unloading of students on/off the bus: provide special assistance to students when required.
Assists the driver with maintaining cleanliness of bus by sweeping and removing trash and other items from the bus interior.
Ability to physically assist in evacuating students from a bus in case of emergency.
Provide assistance during emergencies, evacuation planning and drills; operates emergency exits.
Ability, once trained, to properly contain and respond to bodily fluid spills.
Ability to demonstrate the physical requirements as listed during periodic field training, and/or to complete an annual "strength test"; which simulates evacuation procedures and physical movements required to safely perform the duties of this position.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSING:
Must possess current First Aid/CPR certification within 60 days of hire.
Must maintain current first aid card at all times.
Must maintain an average of 8 classroom training hours per year (provided).
CONDITIONS:
This is a classified 10-month position.

SALARY: Will be determined by terms of the current negotiated agreement. The amount due under the contract will be pro-rated monthly in accordance with district policy.
